Khmer Translation Sprint Round 2

Dezember 4th, 2017 von buergermeister

After two years it was really time to organize another sprint to move on in Fedoras translation to khmer. I started to organize it back in September. Normally enought time to get it done, but like often here the communication chain was broken and I didnt hear back from the event place if we can do it. So I did hear as I did ask on which date we might delay it. So now the last things had to be organized in very short time. With the consequence also have to have only a short time to make marketing for the event. But the result was not that bad, we have in Cambodia anyway the problem that for a lot of people the Saturday is a normal working day. Especially students, who have during week a normal job, going on Saturday to university. Like Kuylim Tith, he could join us for translation only on sunday. But then he translated like two years ago, a lot.
On Saturday we started at 9 am with an introductional talk about the Fedora project itself. There was some questions and after answering them, we started to do all necessary steps to get all participants an FAS account and subscribe all mailing lists and make all the things. This takes always a while and we needed until 1.30pm to do it all. But now there are 13 new FAS accounts in Cambodia.

The only thing that lays me like a stone in the belly is, that the L10N has on their pages in the regulations written, that they require an personal wiki page and that is only possible after getting into another group as CLA/FPCA.
Normally its not a problem, just doing it later with the participants means on some I have to run behind to make sure its done, and they always feel safer if somebody is doing it with them. So hope that will be done during the next week.
My co-organizer went out during that time, to get the lunch, which brought some smiles to the faces. We decided this time to go for pizza, which is here not cheap but young Cambodians like it also like other young people around the world.

After eating this delicious lunch, we started with the translation or better to have a deeper look into Zanata. Then the first day was nearly finished but we managed to really start with the translation. Votey surprised me in the evening asking if we could start earlier in the morning as planned, so we decided to start one hour earlier.

Kuylim was already waiting in the morning as I arrived, I did not see him for nearly two years as he was in Korea for studying but now he is back and already started from home again to translate. He also translated as I remember it, nobody can stop him when he is started. Also Hok Sovanvotey aka votey, translated a lot, she finished all translations for getfedora.org by herself. But we not just translated to khmer, as my co-organizer is czech, he also translated to czech language. He started to translate cockpit to his native language.
We concentrated this time to translate more the group “web” to get something done which is faster visible to the public. Votey managed to translate getfedora.org entirely. She holds the record, with 5817 words translated just on sunday. Kuylim made a huge progress in translating spins.fedoraproject.org, its to 65% done. There are also some translations on labs.fedoraproject.org, arm.fedoraproject.org and others but still some work to do. All in all the translation of the web part went from 0 to 40% and main also raised to 13%. The group agreed to have no lunch break and go instead all together for dinner and so we worked during the lunch time also. But we went after 6pm to a nearby soup place.

Looking retroperspective it was a very succesful event, not just because the translation made progress as more that we did win with Votey another translator like Kuylith, who wants to continue the translation. We also had time to talk, how we could improve the situation with the translation work and together we developed an idea, what we could do. We will start with end of this month with smaller meetups, just to come together and move on with the translation. Let’s see if that will work out.
