FUDCon APAC Phnom Penh 2016

Dezember 9th, 2016 von buergermeister

FUDCon 2016, that was for me first of all a lot of work especially after the change of the venue in nearly last minute. Instead of ITC BarCamp happened this year at Norton University, what turned out not to be a good choice. A new hotel had to be found, not an easy task as on this side of the river are not many yet.

What I learned during my stay in South East Asia is, things need time here. So last minute changes bring you a lot of more work, what costs you time that you could spend in other tasks. So you need a lot of flexibility to handle that, a thing that drives a german sometimes mad. A special thanks goes here to Yekleang Dy, who helped me organizing all this small but important things like getting the people from the airport, the breakfast and lunch. I hope she helps me also for future events we planning in Cambodia.

Even the rooms of Norton University are better the exhibition area is it compared to ITC not, so there was much lesser exhibitors. Even the talks play a more vital role at the BarCamp, the exhibition seems to be from interest to. I remember last year the exhibition was not just bigger they had a stage with talks to. This and the the venue itself, which is located on the peninsula between Tonle Sap and Mekong. To get there you have to cross the Tonle bridge, what is especially in times of the rush hours horror. So that and the rain which was on sunday might kept a lot visitors away. But still the auditorium at the opening ceremony was filled (not comparable with the 3.500 seats at ITC but still 1.000 people). Next to Alex Davis Environment, Science and Technology Officer of the US Embassy in Cambodia, Dr. Seng Sopheap President of the National Institute of Post, Telecommuncation and ICT, Chan Sokheang Rector of Norton University, H.E. Chun Vat Director General of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunication and our own Fedora Community Action and Impact Coordinator Brian Exelbierd gave a keynote.

Brians keynote nailed it down, there is no better way for an IT student as contributing to an Open Source project like Fedora to improve his CV, everybody can see what he has done because it is visible for all, his contributions are very visible for possible employer. Sadly we could not fill this large room again for the following talks, other events had that problem to, I had during FOSSASIA in that room a talk, which was also then just 10 people in that large room. But the rooms we had on the other floors was at least on Saturday good filled.

Especially Mohan Prakaschs workshop about Android Development with Fedora and also Jens Petersens talk about Functional Programming was good filled. In Jens talk was alone more then 25 students of PNC (Passerelles numériques Cambodge). A school who gives the young from underprivileged families a chance to become an IT professional.

Besides that there was time to speak about the situation in APAC and develop ideas how to improve Fedoras presence in the region. I had good conversations with Gerard Braad and Tommy about, what could help in China and with Jens about Japan. We also had the chance to deepen the contacts with the organizers of other Barcamp in the region, so was organizers from Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Hong Kong around. Finding contributors in Cambodia is still very hard, the awareness for Open Source is low but presenting Fedora to an bigger audience in cooperation with an well know and good visited event, gave us the chance to make Fedora more known in Cambodia. Objective was to make Fedora more known in Cambodia and show that Fedora is leading the development in the FOSS world and that Fedoras contributors are experts in their area. To be sponsor of the BarCamp ASEAN, made Fedora very visible and also the big banners in the main hall did a good job. And it is still working, as the pictures go viral now.

Also giving the Barcamp volunteers FUDCon T-Shirts made us a lot of new friends. So there will be a brighter future for Fedora in Cambodia.

No event report – No badge!

    August 13th, 2016 von buergermeister

Some was triggering me during this week, to get the badge for the Release Party for Fedora 24 awarded. But looking to the wikipage I find not a lot reports, even when I look at the event pages I dont find them. On some I only find pictures, well it seems I am expected to know everybody of Fedora by face.

So if you want something bring something, if you expect to get the badge awarded, link your event report on the wiki pages!

    Design Team FAD

    August 4th, 2016 von buergermeister

Durng the weekend of 28th to 31st of July I was in Westford for the Design Team FAD, which we had now for the second time and we use mainly for organizing the work in the team. We all arrived during the week, but we are much lesser then last year, as some flights are more expensive like mine. So we are just 7 people this year.

Day one we spending most of the time with preparing for the open badges hackfest which we will held tomorrow. So we prepared some Inkscape lessons for an entry to Inkscape. The rest of the day we was spending time for organizational stuff we have to do for the work with the Design Team. We organized during the FAD 2015 the work of the Design Team new, we have since then regular meetings in IRC where we look over our ticket queue. Since we doing that, we handle all tickets very fast and our ticket queue is always in short time solved. But that creates another problem, we never have tickets for newcomers left, so we have to find a solution for that. The other problem we have with that is, that we concentrating to much on the tickets and the design for the distribution itself does not end up there, so we sometimes loosing track of it. With the meeting we have to find a solution for it as a bigger part of the Design team is now living in APAC, like Ryan Lerch and me. So its very difficult for us joining the regular meeting. We also spent time organizing the migration of our ticket system to Pagure, which will be happen soon. The migration from trac to Pagure is for the Design Team and the Badges a little bit more problematic as we need some features to do so.

Next to this organizational things we had on saturday an open house workshop, about using Inkscape and doing badges with it. Mo has an more detailed report about that part of the FAD

    FAD Kuala Lumpur

    Juli 14th, 2016 von buergermeister

Every year again, could be said if the budget.next not would enforce the Ambasadors to meet in summer instead of the end of the calendar year to come together and working on the budget plan for the next year. So after Singapore in December the APAC ambassadors came in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia again together. For me is the way to KL just one hour longer as to Singapore, but there is one hour time difference, so I arrived again very late.

The first day was mostly for discussions how to cut the budget of this year so that it fits to the huge budget cut. Having 11.5k US$ budget for the whole year and paying the regional FAD out of it, means for the APAC region after the FAD and paying the media the budget is gone. The next bigger agreement was how to continue with FUDCon in APAC, if it is a good idea to switch to FUDCon APAC with an bi-annually cycle.

It looks we will switch to such one, as we have to to save some money as still a lot of Asians want to travel to Flock. But the FUDCon is still needed in the region for grow our amount of contributors there and connect the region better together. For 2017 are no bids so far, maybe there coming some up. But starting with 2018 we might have FUDCon only each second year.

After reviewing the current budget and some discussions about the problems of the region, day 1 of the FAD ended and it followed a journey with trains to Izhars house where his mother had prepared a dinner for us, because there was Hari Raya Aidilfitri, so we could enjoy some local specialities. Was good for me, I love beef redang anyway and the malaysian version is also good.

The second day was filled with discussions for the budget for next year. There is not much room after the cut, so most of the events dont get budget anymore, just two main events get a larger part, the rest floats into release parties, a few smaller events and the swag production.

Unfortunately we had for the second day only until the late afternoon as some was already flying home then. I did fly back next morning to arrive right in time in the office, just that the flight was delayed and I came a little bit later as planned.

As a conclusion, we still have extreme problems in this region. The Ambassadors think not as Fedorians of the region as just on their own needs first. There is still a huge gap between, what is done and what is reported. Not to speak about missing invoices and carelessness with the reimbursements.

Looking for Records, Looking for Contributions

    April 17th, 2016 von buergermeister

A few days ago, the voting for the Supplemental Wallpaper for Fedora 24 opened. And I am impressed, how many Fedora contributors have voted so far, but I have to tell you that even I dont know the exact number yet. Nuancier is written in a way, that I cant look into the numbers before it is published. But Fedora Badges gives a little bit of an insight, but you have to see as we made that badge for the first time there was a lot of discussion about badges for voting, so it must be claimed manually and its not claimed by all who vote. But now we have already 207 badges for Fedora 24 claimed, compared to 89 for Fedora 23. So the amount of voters is already doubled and there is still nearly a week time for the votes!

Personally I am impressed and happy to see that lot of interest in this part of Fedora. For me is the Supplemental Wallpaper Contest a so called low hanging fruit, which make it very easy possible to contribute to Fedora.

The first step from consumer to contributor is by far the hardest and if this step is done, it becomes way easier to do more. I thinking since a long time to open the voting also to people who have not cla/fpca +1 membership. That would be from my perspective a necessary step, but I always have the fear for the quality. We reached a level of quality now, which is good but still our own contributors have a strong faible for blue, the rather would vote for an halfway acceptable blue wallpaper instead of an amazing shot of an bird.

We already installed a weight system for the voting, members of the Fedora Design Team have an higher weight with there vote and there is also the group of Nuancier Mentors, who have also more weight for their vote.

Originally the Nuancier Mentors was thought as a group who continuously contributed to the Supplemental Wallpaper Contest, to get them mostly out of the problem not to be allowed to vote by themselves. That´s a bit chicken-egg problem with this ¨low hanging fruit¨” you also can scare contributors them off with this.

The Nuancier Mentors group was also thought for giving them more responsibility and improve the quality of the submissions. But its not that far implemented as I would like, as Nuancier is simple a sideshow. There is still the feature for the multi-monitor wallpaper, which is not implemented yet but ready to do so. There are also some needed features, I had this time a bit of trouble to moderate the last submissions. There are four submissions this time, who could not been moderated as I have to do for all a legal research (I had to reject this time 3 for violations, people are not aware they cant submit everything). So I need a small time between the end of submission phase and voting phase, thats right now not possible as it opens automatically and I also might need some time after the election.

    • But there are other things, who could be helpful improving the Contest. First of all we have way to many wallpaper packages, people always asking how to install them. The nicest thing to do would be to deliver them by default, replace the GNOME (and also on the other DEs) extra ones. That would be the nicest thing to do. That would make the wallpaper really prominent and might animate more to contribute in higher quality.
    • As the Nuancier Mentors group was thought for increasing the quality of the wallpaper through giving hints what could be improved with an submission that requires tiny changes in what can be submitted. Its lesser possible then to submit the work of somebody else (that would decrease the amount of legal research I have to do) as changes might require the source. But Nuancier has to be change to submit versions of a submission. And that requires some work. There is the problem with acceptance/moderation to solve then. But I think that kind of moderation can be done then by the mentors. So there is a way how to do it to find and it must be implemented.
    • Open the voting for everybody with an FAS account. I think that can be done for Fedora 25, to secure the quality, we could change the weight system a bit more, so that Fedora contributors have a higher value in vote to prevent fake-accounts and cheating votes. I really would like to open it, lets see if we can do for F25.

But all requires some work and I am sure Pingou would be happy to get some help in implementing new features for Nuancier. But its open anyway, you can find the source code here.

Current Score Supplemental Wallpaper Fedora 24

    März 25th, 2016 von buergermeister

Its more then a month ago, that I opened the Contest for finding the Supplemental Wallpaper for Fedora 24. Its time to give a little inside view and current score, what is going on.

What was new this time was the limitation of submission a single user can do, and so far it suffused what it was expected to do. The quality is significant higher. Also the rejects are this time, much lower, just 2 this time after we had for Fedora 23 a new record. But I have to say its again, that some would look really look better with a little bit of work on the picture. I really hope we can integrate the “mentoring process” soon into Nuancier. The mentors group already exists, and it would raise the quality of the wallpaper more. Here are my 5 favorites so far:

So far we have 99 submissions, and 97 are valid. 53 badges for contributions are handed out, but a lot of contributors have no badges account, and the most of them are fresh contributors. But there is still time for submissions, until 11th of April. So go make your contribution, if you not have done it yet!

    Document Freedom Day Phnom Penh

    März 24th, 2016 von buergermeister

As one of the points we had to revive the Phnom Penh Linux User Group again, was to really do activities on Software-, Hardware- and Document Freedom Day and coming to a regularly meeting, which we have now each first Tuesday in the month at the iCafe. As it is the time for Document Freedom Day (DFD) we will have at our next meeting of course, a topic that fits to it. I will be showing how easily it can be done to use Inkscape for presentation slides, to bring the people to use this instead of flash, pdf or more evil prezi.

The talk will happen 5th of April 2016, 8.00pm at the iCafe (next to Brother88, on 2nd floor) #196z Street 19

    InstallParty Phnom Penh

    Februar 9th, 2016 von buergermeister

Last Saturday, we had another event with the PPLUG. Back on Software Freedom Day 2015, we agreed that we should have some InstallParties here in Phnom Penh to growth the amount of Linux users. It took us a while until most of us had time for doing such an event. But on 30th January we all had time, a venue was found very fast the National Institute of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Communication Technology (NIPTICT) offered their rooms and supplied us also with drinking water and the necessary equipment.

We started at 1pm and the room filled up very quickly around 30 people showed up, who wanted to know more about Linux and Free Software. We started with an introduction talk what Free Software is and I did later on an introduction to the most common Linux distributions.
We demonstrated later on installation processes and gave an introductions to the file hierarchy and made with them the first steps in their new operating system. Even their choice was not Fedora, its a win for the Linux community in Phnom Penh, especially the Phnom Penh LUG got new life with this event.

Look over the fence – StartUp Weekend Phnom Penh

    Februar 6th, 2016 von buergermeister

Linux and Free Software plays in South East Asia not that role as in Europe or North America. To change that at least a bit, I came here. The asian culture plays definitely a role and this was often discussed. But it plays lesser the vital role as we think and as the linked article shows, we will not find an easy an solution for the cultural differences. From my perspective it is lesser necessary that we adopt, the most asians I met are willing to accept the differences and can live with them.
The people in South East Asia have other interests and that is the problem, Google has here more success with his Google Developer Community. There are only a few successful FOSS events and most of them are one timer opposite the BarCamp scene is huge. BarCamp Yangon 14.000, Bangkok 7.000, Phnom Penh and HCMC 5.000 visitors. If you go to them you will meet a lot of tech interested people but you will realize that the interest in start up topics is much higher. I am not the only one who realized that, Pravin made the expirience on his visit to BarCamp Yangon also.

So it was time for me, to digg deeper into the StartUp scene and look if we have common areas and if we could inter-connect so that we have an profit from. So I participated in StartUp Weekend Phnom Penh 2016 as an mentor. What is StartUp Weekend? We would call it Hackfest, people come together to work on a specific problem. On start some people pitch (we would call it lightning talk)  about a problem they want to solve and then people can vote for it and join that team. Then they work on the problem with the target to build out a business with it and on the end they have an final pitch again, before a jury.

On this StartUp Weekend 2 of the idea was directly open source related, but both of them do not understand some principles of the open source and free software world and for that will be lesser successful. But there was other interesting ideas of technical nature. One was the idea to uniting different smart cards into one, but later on became, because of the limited storage on a magnet card, an smart phone app and solved the problem just partly. The other one started as an app from the begin on. All in all there was 11 teams, with ideas like student card, and idea about used books, an medical consultation app for the people living in the provinces and some others more.

So there are overlaps with the free software community, especially there are special editions for developer. In this ones we should engage, to win new users and contributors. We have to go some other ways in Asia, that is for sure. All in all it was an interesting experience to look over the fence.
