Design Team FAD

August 4th, 2016 von buergermeister

Durng the weekend of 28th to 31st of July I was in Westford for the Design Team FAD, which we had now for the second time and we use mainly for organizing the work in the team. We all arrived during the week, but we are much lesser then last year, as some flights are more expensive like mine. So we are just 7 people this year.

Day one we spending most of the time with preparing for the open badges hackfest which we will held tomorrow. So we prepared some Inkscape lessons for an entry to Inkscape. The rest of the day we was spending time for organizational stuff we have to do for the work with the Design Team. We organized during the FAD 2015 the work of the Design Team new, we have since then regular meetings in IRC where we look over our ticket queue. Since we doing that, we handle all tickets very fast and our ticket queue is always in short time solved. But that creates another problem, we never have tickets for newcomers left, so we have to find a solution for that. The other problem we have with that is, that we concentrating to much on the tickets and the design for the distribution itself does not end up there, so we sometimes loosing track of it. With the meeting we have to find a solution for it as a bigger part of the Design team is now living in APAC, like Ryan Lerch and me. So its very difficult for us joining the regular meeting. We also spent time organizing the migration of our ticket system to Pagure, which will be happen soon. The migration from trac to Pagure is for the Design Team and the Badges a little bit more problematic as we need some features to do so.

Next to this organizational things we had on saturday an open house workshop, about using Inkscape and doing badges with it. Mo has an more detailed report about that part of the FAD

FOSSOGRAPHY 2015

Juli 7th, 2015 von buergermeister

I will do in November a new event about Free Software graphic tools – FOSSOGRAPHY. This event plans to bring developer and user of this software together. Its thought of a kind of showcase about the newest developments in this areas and what can be done with free software. The projects shall win this way new users as even more contributors.
But it shall be also a place where the various programmers of the different projects can meet and connect to work on stuff where the programs should be working together. But also a place where you can come and tell people about an idea you have that might get software in this area improved.

The Call for Papers as well the registration for the event is open now and closes on 30th September. We search for talks, handout sessions, workshops, hackfest from the following areas:

  • Open Source and photographics
  • Free Software tools for image manipulation and raw development
  • 3D graphics and renderer
  • Free Software for vector graphics
  • Font design with Open Source
  • Free Software tools for 2D & 3D animation
  • Video editing and production with Open Source
  • Game development and asset creation with Open Source
  • UX design in/for and with Open Source
  • Desktop publishing and print design with FreeSoftware
  • Open Source 3D printing soft- and hardware
  • Open Source Color Management
  • Aerial photography and video with Open Source
  • DIY (open source) dolly systems
  • File formats for free graphic software

The idea to this evnet, was born a long time ago as another event who looks wants the same doesnt become what it should be.
After the decision was made to do it was open the place where it should be and there was a lot of thinking if it is a good idea to go first time to Asia. Yeah there are some disadvantages, like working style of Asians or the most Europeans/Americans think flying there would be more expensive as travelling inside Europe or the the amount of FOSS contributors isnt that high on this continent. But at a certain point we as free software movement have to go to Asia to get them involved and not always saying, we dont have contributors there!

But there is something else, we have to carry the costs for the event, where is actually a positive thing doing it in Asia as that gets amazingly cheap as well we want to support speakers and projects with there travel costs. We try to collect most of this money from the community, so if you believe in the goal of the event and/or using this tools, you can help us. We made a pledgie for that purpose and an indiegogo campaign will follow. But watch we want to give you something in return!

FUDCon APAC 2015 – Summary

Juli 1st, 2015 von buergermeister

I was last week in Pune for FUDCon, so its time to write about the experiences.

Day -2

I had to start my travel 2 days before the event from airport Leipzig flying to Munich, well the travel to Leipzig and also the checkin and flight was without something to mention. Just one hour ride to Leipzig and 40 minutes flight to Munich. I had a long layover in Munich so I checked before the situation with WIFI and electricity, well Munich has free wifi and they even proudly anounced that the equipped the gate areas with power supply, well they was there but simple not working. With a little searching I found one which was working but there was nothing to sit there so I spent the time in EMEA Ambassadors meeting standing :D

Day -1

Also for that day there was no action, boarding the plane in the morning and leaving it in Mumbai in the night. The immigration process with the TVOA visa worked well, except to find the counter for them was difficult. So if you travel to India and eligible to get it, thats the easiest way.
Outside the airport Prima Yogi Loviniltra and a volunteer did already wait for me, just Ryan Lerch was missing but he joined as a few minutes later. So the fetch on the airport was well organized. The cab ride took some time but interesting conversations made that not feelable. So we arrived in the morning in Pune just enough for 3 hours sleep.

Day 0

I had not really time for a good breakfast but I needed one as I had not a dinner either, but Kushal was already standing there telling me I was to late. But I managed to grab something to eat even the waiter always removed my tools when I grabbed something. Also here the transport was well organized and the bus for bringing us to MIT was already waiting.
On the first day I joined a few sessions but I will write only something about the most important for me. We had a BoF session for the next APAC FUDCon. What I am worried about is the style which is coming up there, just finding some point why a thing not might be good instead of trying to find out how problems can be solved!

Day 1

I started the day with Jiri Eischmanns presentation about the Fedora workstation and his presence and future. I joined several other talks to, where I just want to mention the Achieving Community Goals With Fedora one from Tenzin Chokden, awesome job of Joerg Simon and Fabian Affolter and their l10n hackfest for the tibetian language, good work. Besides that I had many organizational conversations for organzing stuff in the APAC region.

Day 2

This was actually the most busy day for me as I had in the morning my own workshop about using Inkscape. Well there are some negative things, the room was not the best choice, its hard to work on a small table attached to the chair. But more worst was that the picture from projector was looped to an camera, but the camera was missing so we had to find that out first, so I lost some time for the workshop. But we still managed to draw with the participants what I wanted to achieve and they have a good foundation to use Inkscape in their work and learn it more. I already prepared a screencast, which you can find here.

Ryan switched more to a presentation style, which I only do on events to impress people what with our free software tools can be done and how easy it can be. But as I expect people on a FOSS event like FUDCon are already open to using our tools and just need some help starting to work with them and the best way to learn it is by doing.

After the lunch we had another Ambassadors BoF for APAC, time to speak more Ambassador stuff. We made during this year some progress in APAC and on FUDCon it was visible a lot of asians in a Fedora Ambassador shirts, but we still have not all equipped with them.

We also made progress in producing F21 media centralized but still there are some problems to solve as the process didnt work well, we had no central production in APAC for F22 but we talked how we shall do it in the future and think found the best solution for it. We also had time to discuss if it would possible to replace the DVD media at least partly with USB sticks. We agreed on doing a research on prices until next FAD APAC end of the year and look there if we do it or not. And yes we found an place where we want to do the next FAD – Singapore so we will work on it during the next months to organize it. So we moved again forward.

Day 3

Some went out really in the morning to spent some time in Mumbai, but I am to old for touristic pressure even I would like to have seen more from that city, I was in India for FUDCon and not for an touristic tour. So I went out of the hotel at noon and the cab brought me to the airport, where I enjoyed the sun outside and later I spent some time with Danishka Naven and Izhar Firdaus in the airport.

Day 4

This day I entered a plane in Mumbai short after the day had begun and woke up landing in Zurich. Well I found easily an AC port in this airport and free wifi was also available so I could do some work during the time I had to wait for the next flight, wich was this time just 5 hours later. After this flight I just had a short trip with the train and I arrived right in time for the Design Team meeting.

Summary

It was an interesting trip to India seeing how people live there and make new friends, meeting people I worked already with and meeting old friends. I think we moved for the Ambassadors in the APAC region and that means Fedora makes progress in the future in Asia.

FOSSASIA – day 3 – The hackfest

März 3rd, 2014 von buergermeister

Last day of FOSSASIA in Cambodia, the day for hands on and hackfests, today we changed the venue and went instead of Norton University to the OpenInstitute in Phnom Penh. We planned a hackfest helping them who want to join Fedora doing there first steps. On the end of the day we had done everything, from creating FAS accounts, making personal wiki pages, creating ssh key, we even did a little key signing party and 6 people have done the first steps to become Ambassador. Two of them are from Cambodia, where we had no Ambassadors before. They are also interested to make Fedora available in Khmer, the local language. It was really a nice hackfest.

We really worked the whole days on all things and explained a lot, so that our new contributors get an easy start. After the long hackfest, we went back to the hotel and managed to go all together including our new contributors to go for a nice dinner together, the last one in Phnom Penh, for the most of us. So for Fedora FOSSASIA was really an success.

Upcoming FOSSASIA 2014

Februar 17th, 2014 von buergermeister

In a week I will start a journey to an event in Asia called FOSSASIA. This event will take this year place from 28th February to 2nd of March at Norton University in Phnom Penh/Cambodia It will be a long trip for me spending 47 hours in planes and airports but I think its worth it. We will have an track on this event only dedicated to Fedora related talks.

Fedora Track Friday 28th February 13.00 – 16.30

  • Fedora Next: An Overview: by Truong Anh Tuan,
  • The Ultimative Fedora A-Z Talk: by Gnokii,
  • Introduction to FOSS techniques (aimed at students): by Sarup Banskota, 1 hour workshop
  • Testing Fedora cloud images in Eucalyptus private cloud: by Kushal Das,
  • 7 Ways To Contribute To Fedora Without Programming Skills: by Gnokii,
  • Fedora Ambassadors Program: by Truong Anh Tuan,

Fedora Track Saturday 1st March 9.00 – 16.30

On Sunday, we will have the whole day an hackfest

where interested people can do together with us, there first steps as Fedora contributors. Kushal will work with the people interested in packaging, Tuan with that for becoming an Ambassador and I will work with that interested in doing design tasks for Fedora. I am really interested what comes out of that hackfest and how many new contributors we can win there.

I will also give an Inkscape workshop on the event, which isnt scheduled yet, so Fedora has really a big participation on FOSSASIA this year. I will stay a little bit longer in Cambodia, but not for holiday. I will give some workshops at Smallworld Cambodia and for Webessentials and I will be back right on time for Chemnitzer Linux-Tage.

Retrospective Flock

August 19th, 2013 von buergermeister

First Flock is history now and I am back home now. Back on work as next event is end of this week and there are some other important things to do also. But is time to write a little report how Flock was. I am not a big friend of to write down I visited this talk or that one. Personally I submitted only a hackfest for the Supplemental Wallpaper. There wasnt a lot of people but the right one at this hackfest.
The problem we face right now or since the begin is, that the wiki isnt thought for collecting wallpapers and a lot of people have problems with it, as the wiki doesnt create thumbnails anymore when the filesize is to big (thats often the case) and the second problem is that we opened the voting to all Fedora contributors and our voting system isnt thought for such amount of voting possibilities.
So we discussed solutions and it turned out, a application would be the best solution for it and we came further as we have done the mockups for the application. Jennifer Kotler, who worked on Fedora Badges took that task and really finished it on Flock, as we agreed to come together on Monday in a session again, we had the mockups there and had time to discuss it with the Infrastructure Team and got some good points from them.

Now there are only to fix some small things and the application has to be coded and we can continue with the Supplemental Wallpapers in a more open way. I think it will not be ready for Fedora 20 at least not for the whole process, but hopefully for the voting. But with Fedora 21 we will have it. So just with that achievement Flock was an success, but there was more. I met a lot of people, some I did know for years via IRC, a lot of conversations and new ideas. So Flock was really great.

LibreGraphicsMeeting 2013 day 3

April 15th, 2013 von buergermeister

Saturday was the last the of LibreGraphicsMeeting 2013 in Madrid, the day started for me with an talk who was done via internet – The GIMP Magazin. I attended also Tav’s talk about the future things in Inkscape as there is really movenment changing the internal render engine. I had spoken with Tav at the party on the evening before about some things. Next talk for me was Jimmac’s talk how he misused Blender for doing the the introduction videos for GNOME. His talk ended like always ;)

After the last talk the “closing session” followed and there are a lot of changes in organizing LibreGraphicsMeeting in the future, we discussed some things. What I found very interesting is that Ale Rimoldi played the protector of the poor people, he said we should recignize that some cant afford to buy the ticket before and get later reimbursed. Find that very interesting as I went last year to him asking if that can be done for Gustav Gonzalez he was strict against it. Everything else I had as point was said from other people. So there will be some good changes in the future. We had later an organizing meeting for people who interested to help organizing LGM and it ended with nice ideas. As possible places for next year are Montreal/Canada, Medellin/Colombia, Buenes Aires/Argentina and Leipzig/Germany as possible hosts for next LGM version. And there will be a competition, means who makes the best proposals and presents the best solutions will get it. That session took a long time, but I am sure the changes are a big step forward in the right direction.

After that we went to an short bring your own food party and it was very nice, because a lot of nice discussions went on there. As Chris Murphy attended the LGM and also Pippin from GIMP we had a lot of time to speak about where to do the next Color Management Hackfest and we think Norway would be an good option as we could use the color lab, with the tools we need for driving CM on Linux forward. After Norway we think its the best option to make the CM Hackfest combined with LGM as there are lot of color people around and also applications that could be interested and need help. So on the end it was a nice week, with nice people a lot of new informations and nice results. Thx to all sponors to help to make that meeting happen and also thx to Fedora for sponsoring me.

LibreGraphicsMeeting 2013 day 2

April 14th, 2013 von buergermeister

The post for this day took me a while to write because on the third day there was the party and thanks to GIMP we had a lot of free beer there. But before the party was we had another day with talks, workshops and hackfests/disciussions to make. I had my second talk about open source movies after my talk Nina Paley had her talk asking where a useful free animation tool is.

The rest of the day I worked together with Boudewijn Rempt and Gustav Gonzalez on ideas how Tupi and Krita can be work together. We found some bugs in the Tupi code, which will be fixed soon and that will make import more faster. We also worked together with Jon Nordby from Mypaint on ideas to have a common format for brushes so Krita, MyPaint, GIMP, Tupi and Synfig could work with the same brushes.

Review 2012

Also stay tuned…..

First Linux ColorManagement Hackfest

November 14th, 2012 von buergermeister

I am back from the first Linux ColorManagement Hackfest in Brno, four days working on color management stuff an we achieved a lot. Normally I planned for every day a post, but there was no time for it, really every minute was used for hacking and learning, testing. We even went not out for lunch on Saturday and Sunday, just pizza or sandwiches, on Friday we also did not went out for dinner we worked until the RedHat offices was closed at 10pm. But we had a lot of fun on Saturday during the “Colord vs. Oyranos Bowling Death Match”, colord has won it ;)

For me is was mostly handing over TaxiDB to Daniel Jahre, who is interested in continuing the work on it, but we also worked a lot on it, because like it is now its not really useful. I personally like the KISS principle but Sebastian who made during the TaxiDB happen during GSoC 2011 made it really so “kissy” that there are now many problems there. So we worked on implementing full text search for the profiles and things like that, as we need it in the future for the work with colord.

Øyvind (pippin) analysed all the VCGT data in the icc profiles from Taxi so that he could find a colour-managed resistant dithering routine to reduce the amount of banding in gradients. Designers like me using always gradients with colors very nearby on there work, that includes wallpapers so they are interested in it as you can see here.

Lukáš Tinkl fixed a lot of bugs in colord-kde and implemented also some new things and polished the UI, so there is a really working version now. To bad that Daniel Nicoletti could not work on that, as he was arrested in Munich at the airport. He still needs some help with that problem. Honza Grulich did a lot of work on the UI of kolormanager and Dan Vrátil got ksnapshot working color managed and fixed a lot of bugs on different things, like an bug in SELinux.

Besides of that, there was a lot of discussions and tests get printing color managed under Linux, so Till Kampetter, Richard Hughes, Chris Murphy and Kai-Uwe Behrmann worked on that. It looks they found out also an nasty bug in Ghostscript. There was also discussed how to do an real print preview and Richard Hughes coded a small reference implementation. During doing that he found a bug in lcms2 which has to be fixed but he found with Pippin also a problem with CAIRO, so there is still work which has to be done. I am sure a lot of the things that was discussed there will help on a new printing dialog for GNOME. I am not sure I mentioned here everything, there was done a lot of things more. Think Hughsie mentioned in his blogpost some things more.

I am sure that is was a good idea to bring experts in color management together, with the authors of software that should be included in that process. As John Layt wrote “We really need more of these type of events to build communities around the common desktop infrastructure.” Right now we plan to do a kind of round table for one day at the LibreGraphicsMeeting and do an Linux ColorManagement Hackfest next year again.

Thanks goes to RedHat Czech for hosting us, Jaroslav Reznik for helping me a lot with organizing the hackfest and of course to the sponsors Google and KDE e.V.

Linux Color Management Hackfest Day 0

November 9th, 2012 von buergermeister

Today was for the most of the participants the day for travel or better  for arrival at Brno. So we all checked into the hotel and waited there for all to arrive. But there was also bad messages as we arrived, Daniel Nicoletti was arrested on the airport in Munich and we did not know really what did happen. After all arrived we went for a beer and some local food and of course there was a lot of “color discussions”.
