Winner F21 supplemental wallpaper

August 23rd, 2014 von buergermeister

The voting phase for supplemental wallpaper is closed now and the results are there. But is time to look a little bit back on the contest this time. We had this time lesser contributions as last time, we got 87 submissions where on the end 83 was accepted. Last time we had 114 from 117 submissions. Also this time the quality of the submissions was lower as last time.
One of the reasons for this is, the results of the last votings, I have spoken with some of the contributors where did contribute high quality content, why they not contribute this time.
I will find a solution how we can raise the quality of the submissions again. There are several solutions in my head. But for now is time to show the winner pictures which will get packaged.

If you are interested in all the results you can find them in Nuancier.

Status of Fedora 21 Supplemental Wallpaper

Juni 22nd, 2014 von buergermeister

The submission phase for the supplemental wallpaper for Fedora 21 is now half over. Some already asked me for the status and most wanted also to see what is submitted. But we decided not to show them until after the voting, to avoid that people vote only for people they know instead of the quality of the submission.
But I think now its time to give a little bit of an overview what is the status now. So far we have 59 submissions, 3 of them had to be rejected, wrong license, one was an double and one had the wrong resolution.
The good thing is more people as last time contributed to the wallpaper, the bad thing is that I got a strong feeling some just did to get the badge. So the quality of some submissions is low. On the other hand some participated with creating wallpapers especially for the contest, so we have until yet three vector graphics or image manipulations in the contest. In generally a lot of the submissions are nice with the motif its just that a little bit work on the RAW files would help them over the top. Mostly they are over-lighted, some just in areas.
So the question is now, if we change Nuancier in a way that allows the upload of different versions of a submission, so that you can work on them to make them better if necessary.
But that is music which might be played in the future, lets take a little look whats already there. Here are 5 submissions, which are my personal favorites right now.

Just to remind you, there is still time until August 16th for submissions, so more then a month. So jump to Nuancier and make your submission

Submit your wallpaper for Fedora 21!

Mai 2nd, 2014 von buergermeister

It is time to open the submission phase for Fedora 21 Supplemental Wallpapers. This time not only for the voting phase but also for the submission phase, we will use our application Nuancier for it. We hope that makes submissions a lot easier. Be aware its the first time we use it so there might pop up some issues.

There are some rules of technical nature:

  • Submitted wallpapers must use a format that can be read by software available in Fedora Package Collection. Preferred image formats include SVG and PNG.
  • Master files, which may be further edited, should be maintained in non-lossy formats. Preserving vector graphics, raster layers, and channels is important for such materials.
  • Originals for landscape formats must be a minimum of 1600 pixels wide and 1200 pixels high. The larger the better. Photographic submissions should be made at the highest resolution the camera is capable of.
  • Submitted wallpapers should be provided in a 16 x 9 aspect ratio when possible.
  • No watermarks, signatures, photographer/creator names, or messages may be included in any part of the work. However if the license allows, and the photo is compelling enough, we could remove watermarks.

and some of organizational nature:

  • Submissions must not contain material that violates or infringes anothers rights, including but not limited to privacy, publicity or intellectual property rights, or that constitutes copyright infringement. If your submissions include or derive from artwork created by other people, please make sure the license of the original work you incorporate is compatible with Fedora and that you are not violating any of the provisions of its license. Just because a work is licensed with a Creative Commons license does not mean it is free to use (make sure you provide attribution to artists that license their work with a CC Attribution clause.)
  • Submission should have the consent and approval of the author or creator
  • Submissions re thereby licensed to the public for reuse under CC-BY-SA unless specifically identified as being licensed by another approved liberal open source license. See a list of approved licenses for Fedora. Note that we can not accept NC or ND submissions.

The deadline until you can submit your artwork is the August 16 2014 at 23:59 UTC. The voting will open automatically after this deadline.

For the badges hunters, yes there will be badges for it. There will be a badge for submissions, it will be awarded after the examination of the picture if it fits the rules, which you can see above. Another one will be awarded if your submission is chosen and also for the voting process there will be one.

For further questions, you can send me a mail and don’t hesitate to ask me for assistance just write me a mail gnokii@fedoraproject.org.

Supplemental Wallpaper – Go For The Vote!

Oktober 1st, 2013 von buergermeister

The submission time for the Supplemental Wallpaper for Fedora 20 is now over, now there comes even a more hard part select the right ones for the package. As for Fedora 19 everybody who is member of a group additionally to the cla-group can vote. But there is something new this time, you can vote in Nuancier. That makes it a lot easier to vote, as you can see what you are going vote for and not have to look into the wiki like before. You will see voting with Nuancier is fun!

Nuancier is actually a thing why I love to work on Fedora, it took from the idea on Flock to this first working stage only a month. So I have to thank the people who helped to realize this idea. In the future Nuancier will not only serve for the selection process for the package, it will also serve for the submission process. We hope to have it ready for Fedora 21. With this it will become much much easier to submit to the contest and for me it will make it also easier as some things can be tested automatically on the upload. But enough with looking into an glass ball.

You can vote for at least 16 wallpapers, but you have not for 16 just select your favorites. The period for the voting will not be long just until 4th of October 2013 23.59.59UTC. If you want, you can get a badge for the voting but you have to claim it. All submitters will get one and the selected submitters another one, so a lot of badges to award. So now go for the vote and help making Fedora 20 become beautiful!

F20 will become beautiful…

September 13th, 2013 von buergermeister

Half of the submission period for the Supplemental Wallpaper for Fedora 20 is over now. Time to make a kind of status report. First we got so far a lot of submissions this time, nearly 90 and there is still more then 2 weeks left for submissions. Might be a lot of people just wanted to have the badge for the submission. The bad thing is the quality isnt this time so high as for Fedora 19 but there are still nice submissions, so we will get a nice package. This are my personally top 10 right now.

Another thing is I never had before to disqualify that much of submissions. The reasons are wrong sizes, simple to small and also wrong licenses. All of the submitters get in that case a mail from me and you should respond to it otherwise I have no chance as to disqualify it. Still a lot of people have problems with submitting to the wiki, mostly because the wiki cant create thumbnails when the file size of the upload is to big. Dont hesitate and ask me for help!

But for this problem there will be a solution soon, as I wrote in a past post here there will be an application for submissions and the voting in the future. The part for the voting is in a good shape now and it looks we can/will use it already for this period, I really looking forward to this. But for now still time for some more beautiful submissions until 30th September 2013 23:59:59 UTC.

We might have no name for Fedora 20 yet, so the Design Team could not start working on the design for it yet but what you can do contributing to a beautiful look for Fedora 20, is submit to the Supplemental Wallpapers. You might remember the for Fedora 19 choosen ones.

The Winners! – Fedora 19 Supplemental Wallpaper

April 20th, 2013 von buergermeister

A few hours ago the voting for the Supplemental Wallpapers for Fedora 19 ended. This time we had not so much submissions like for Fedora 18 but still enough to make it hard to vote. So it’s time to present the results. If you are interested in the totally results, you will find them here.

I am happy, that we also got this time submissions from people they are not amongst the Fedora contributors yet. But also the submissions from our contributors was damn good. So I looking forward for the Supplemental Wallpaper Contest for Fedora 20.

But for doing it, I need some help. During this contest a lot of problems became visible, the wiki isnt a good place to do it and also our voting application isnt written to handle so much candidates. It looks we need a new application for it, in case you are interested writing such one – join the design channel and speak to me.

Schroedingers Cat will be beautiful

März 15th, 2013 von buergermeister

A few weeks ago, we started the submission phase for the Supplemental Wallpapers for Fedora 19Schrödingers Cat“, normally there would be the half of the submission phase. So time to make a status report, but the good news is we can expand the deadline for submissions to 10th of April.

We’ve definitely got some awesome contributions and this are my personal favorites right now.

But that is just me, remember this time all Fedora contributors can vote. For participating with wallpapers simple submit them to the wiki (if you have problems with it, contact me gnokii@fpo). But watch for the regulations and licenses. One thing is definitely for sure, Fedora 19 will look awesome & beautiful. We’ll have an awesome default wallpaper, a reworked boot process, and a guaranteed nice set of supplemental wallpapers.

Call For Supplemental Wallpaper Submissions

Februar 20th, 2013 von buergermeister

The Design Team is still working on the default wallpaper and design for Fedora’s next version, called “Schrödingers Cat“. We had two public brainstorm sessions and a lot of nice ideas came out: if you want to participate, Mizmo collected the ideas in a Pinterest board.

But that is not the only way you can contribute to Fedora 19. In addition to the default wallpaper, each Fedora version has a package with so called ‘Supplemental Wallpapers,’ submitted by the community. From these submissions, the Design Team traditionally chooses the best (here you can find the for Fedora 18 chosen ones.) This time, not only the design team will vote for the best ones – all Fedora contributors can vote. But first, we need your submissions. So how do you do that?

First there are some rules. Here are the technical specifications:

  • Submitted wallpapers must use a format that can be read by software available in Fedora Package Collection. Preferred image formats include SVG and PNG.
  • Master files, which may be further edited, should be maintained in non-lossy formats. Preserving vector graphics, raster layers, and channels is important for such materials.

Now here are the organizational rules:

  • Submissions must not contain material that violates or infringes another’s rights, including but not limited to privacy, publicity or intellectual property rights, or that constitutes copyright infringement.

  • Submissions re thereby licensed to the public for reuse under CC-BY-SA unless specifically identified as being licensed by another approved liberal open source license. See a list of approved licenses for Fedora. Note that we can not accept NC or ND submissions.

You can submit your material directly to the wiki: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F19_Artwork/Submissions/Supplemental_Wallpapers. Supplemental Wallpaper Fedora 18

September 11th, 2012 von buergermeister

The submission phase for supplemental wallpaper ended already last week. We got this time 65 submissions, not the biggest sum we ever had but the biggest since a few releases. Also this time the quality of the submissions was very good, which made it not easy for the Design Team to decide which should be the choosen. The submissions came from 20 people some submitted only one, some more. Now the Design Team has voted and the results are there. So let us take a look at what will be in the supplemental wallpaper package.

The first one called “Churi” is a submission from Kushal Das – damn if I am honest, that was even my favorite. I like the colors. The next called “Vienna Nights” comes from our own Nicubunu and was taken during the last LibreGraphicsMeeting in Vienna. The “Pink Flower” comes from Cleide Isabel, who contributed her first time to Fedora but I am sure it will be not the last time. She also has two other wallpaper in the package “Patagonia” and “Caminhos”. The really confusing structure on the next wallpaper is somewhere in Duisburg and was submitted by Charly Kühnast, german users might know him more as columnist from LinuxMagazin, but he also does amazing photographs. And because it is so one more of his submissions called “Calluna” was selected. The Lighthouse on the next wallpaper in that really amazing waves was shoot from Francisco Crippa. The next wallpaper comes from Diego Turtulici who normally contributes more to Mageia and Ubuntu, think he submitted two good wallpapers and the one called “Trama calda” was selected. The next one called “Calm” speaks for itself and comes from Harald Hoyer, who contributed also that amazing widescreen wallpaper on the end of this article called “Bastorf Lighthouse”. Sylvain Naudin submitted first one wallpaper unfortunatly the same wallpaper was choosen from Ubuntu for his next version, but everything he submitted after that was even better and so his snowy landscape called “Lioran” and his submission “Luminaire” was selected. Last wallpaper called “Giza At My Roof” and “Schmetterling” came both from our own Tatica.

If you are interested in all the other submissions you find them in the wiki, and I am sure you will also get to the conclusion it wasnt an easy job to decide. For the next collecting for Fedora 19, there will be some changes so stay tuned.

Call for Supplemental Wallpapers

August 19th, 2012 von buergermeister

Fedora brings in addition to the great design standard wallpaper always supplementary wallpapers. That wallpapers are collected from the community and the best 15 of them are chosen from the Design Team and packaged. Now its time to collect that supplementary wallpapers for Fedora 18 “Spherical Cow“.

There are some restrictions for what can be submitted some are technical nature:

  • Must use a format that can be read by software available in Fedora Package Collection. Preferred image formats include SVG and PNG. Master files, which may be further edited, should be maintained in non-lossy formats. Preserving vector graphics, raster layers, and channels is important for such materials.
  • Originals for landscape formats must be a minimum of 1600 pixels wide and 1200 pixels high. The larger the better. Photographic submissions should be made at the highest resolution the camera is capable of.
  • Should be provided in a 16 x 9 aspect ratio when possible.
  • No watermarks, signatures, photographer/creator names, or messages may be included in any part of the work. However if the license allows, and the photo is compelling enough, we could remove watermarks.

some are more organizational nature:

  • Must be covered by the Contributor License Agreement. We cannot accept contributions from individuals who have not signed the CLA in the Fedora Account System. The CLA allows us to properly license artwork submissions for distribution with Fedora and other Fedora projects.
  • Must not contain material that violates or infringes another’s rights, including but not limited to privacy, publicity or intellectual property rights, or that constitutes copyright infringement.
  • Should have the consent and approval of the author or creator
  • Are thereby licensed to the public for reuse under CC-BY-SA unless specifically identified as being licensed by another approved liberal open source license. See a list of approved licenses for Fedora

The deadline until you can submit your artwork is the 5th of September 2012 23:59 UTC. You can submit your material directly to the wiki: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F18_Artwork/Submissions/Supplemental_Wallpapers. Spherical Cow needs a face

August 1st, 2012 von buergermeister

A german floss news page wrote yesterday that Fedora 18 has his shape now. What it still misses is a face and thats not so an easy task with an name like Spherical Cow. Some might read Mizmo’s post about the things that happend yesterday arround the design for Fedora 18. We had yesterday a little brainstorming what to do and it turned into an hackfest and things moved forward. There are some ideas for the design for “cosmic cow”, you can all see them in the post from Mizmo.

But I like to talk a little bit more about mine. In Vienna I saw at the Fedora booth the game OSMOS running, I dont know whats the game about but it creates beautiful spheres and I saw them and thaught thats how spherical cows look like. Gergely took a screenshot of some of them and reminded me yesterday on that idea. So I tried yesterday to create similar spheres with Inkscape. My creation turned out a little bit more “electrical” looking, but thats not bad because electricity is power and Fedora has power.

So thats the status now and right now, I am unhappy with. Especially with the background which contains simple formulas from quantum computing (which should be a cow) e.g. of a qubit. I am also unhappy with the colors. So maybe someone has a idea which brings me forward. You can find the source for playing with it on my fpo account.

Branding stupidity

August 11th, 2011 von buergermeister

One of the last talks I attended on Desktop Summit was “Swimming upstream or downstream? Both!”. Announced as speaker was Vincent Untz, but he didnt the talk alone, there was also Allison Randal, Harald Sitter and our own Jaroslav Řezník.In this talk came up the problem with the branding.

I should start with an quote: “Freiheit ist immer die Freiheit der Andersdenkenden”. Translated it says “Freedom is always the freedom of dissenters” or better Freedom is always and exclusively freedom for the one who thinks differently. This quote is from Rosa Luxemburg a socialist politician from the begin of the 20th century. On the end it means, that you can have your freedom so long that you can accept that other people have an other opinion and give also the freedom to them. So let us talk a little bit about it what it means.
All this started with an blogpost from Aaron Seigo about Building brand together. There was also offered help to doing that. So where is the problem then? So let me show a little bit how the help looks like.

That are the Striped wallpaper done by Ivan Cukic, they was mentioned in the talk as example but it wasnt looked in all sides of that topic. So let me explain a little bit more on that. It was mentioned that they can do the wallpaper in the color of the distribution., fine. There the problem begins. So look how many distributions use blue as main color? So would you see which distribution it is when the logo is removed, in the case of debian, arch or fedora one? So when the colors are interchangable then its very clear that the color dont make it typical, its the pattern. Btw. KDE dont like dark colors so another limit, and they need some light differences in the wallpaper otherwise, the AIR theme dont looks so good (it becomes Win95 grey). So not every color is chooseable.
There is no problem for distributions like Kubuntu or Pardus who provide only the KDE desktop environment that they use the upstream wallpaper or such a striped wallpaper in the color of there distribution. There are more problems on distributions who give the user the possibility to choose the environment they want.
The experience with the desktop of a “normal” user dosnt begin with the desktop himself, it begins with the bootsplash. So what pattern should be used then, the KDE one or that of GNOME? In the case of openSUSE it begins earlier the backgrounds are used in YaST installer.
Anaconda does that not, so no problem for Fedora there. But it should become clear a distribution should look well designed from the begin of installation, over the booting process and finally on the desktop.

As I did the in the talk mentioned “positive example” I was totally captured between limits and sitting between the chairs. First of all green as color for a distribution sucks or better use it for the distribution wallpaper sucks. It looks totally different on every monitor. Move away from this color is extrem hard, there is a party who think the design for openSUSE has to be green because it was always green. What isnt true, there was some versions with blue and some with photo backgrounds. That party doesnt even think about to use the green as a accent. First limitation.
Second limitation, I mentioned KDE needs a lighter color with differences in the lights that the AIR theme looks good. First I came up with a green tone like teal or pine green. To dark for KDE, but they didnt come up with a better solution until short before christmas or the Release Candidates. The solution for them was celadon an light green, they even let Coolo change the codename for the release to using it. It was not the problem using it, but noone of them considered how it would look compared to the color for GNOME.
On GNOME side there was only a limitation called Sonar theme. Jimmac did it once and it looks good and the people love it. There are crazy dudes on ubuntu who make it available for there distribution. The problem with Sonar is, it uses a dark olive green what is additional blended with black. It looks not so good on every green. Two opportunities, first remove Sonar and risk a flame war with the openSUSE is green lovers, second one choose a neutral color who looks Sonar good on and which looks also fine with the KDE color.
I thaught second solution would be the best and choosed a dark grey for the GNOME environment. Vincent Untz spoke with me, that he dont think that GNOME can be represented from the grey I choosed. After a short discussion why I like to use it, the GNOME team had understanding for the choice I made.

So whats the point of all this? Retrospective on the quote I mentioned on the begin, it means if you claim all freedom for yourself you deny it same time to others. There are so many limits of technical nature, ressources and others that one desktop environment cant have all freedom it maybe want. It’s more that one environment can have so much freedom as it is possible if it grant the other ones the same.
The solution is definitly not that KDE designers do the artwork for KDE in Fedora. They would do artwork what gives KDE all freedom but would not think what Fedora, GNOME, XFCE, LXDE and all the others need.
Means to provide an KDE look&feel in a distribution really using a pattern provided from them or means it more to come up with a design what respects the design of KDE?

In the first case the claim for an KDE branded desktop in distributions is so senseless like the claim that all linux distributions should be called gnu/linux! In the second case some people should definitly think about, that a distribution is more then the desktop environment and that they are not the only desktop.

So hopefully some people start to think about that what others need instead of claiming only what they need for themself. Retrospective looked on Aaron Seigos article “Building brand together”, together is not offer something without talking to the other side what they need ;) Using upstream artwork on a multi-desktop distribution will never work! What can work is design artwork what gives the look&feel what KDE like to have but only it needs not more ressources.

Graphical improvements for 11.4

August 18th, 2010 von buergermeister

Some days ago, I showed some of the wallpaper proposals they Ivan Cukic made for openSUSE 11.4. I think they are not the final version but we got good feedback for them and I think they will happen in 11.4. So I played a little bit with them how it could look in generally with the installer, splash and so on. I choosed the grey version because grey is neutral color. And when u come from splash to the windowmanager there changes not the green and it looks very different. So look and tell me what u think. And of course its not final and I have, to make some things better.
