Fedora 23 Will Have Beautiful Supplemental Wallpaper

September 5th, 2015 von buergermeister

The submission phase for the supplemental wallpaper for Fedora 23 isnt over yet. There are so far 169 submissions. But I had to reject this time already 40 because they used material of other pictures without quotation or an trademark was included. So we have 120 submissions in the pot right now. That are right now my favorites:

But there is still one week you can submit your wallpaper, so grab your camera and shoot some nice pictures ;)

Make Fedora 22 Beautiful !

Februar 23rd, 2015 von buergermeister

Time is flying, Fedora 21 is there just 2 months and Fedora 22 alpha is before the door. So it is time to open the Supplemental Wallpaper Contest. We will use again Nuancier Fedoras application fr the submission and the voting. There are also this time some changes, there is now a team of mentors, who look over the submissions and make suggestions how it can be improved. The submission phase is this time much much shorter, you have only until 19th of March to make your submission.

There are some rules of technical nature:

  • Submitted wallpapers must use a format that can be read by software available in Fedora Package Collection. Preferred image formats include SVG and PNG.
  • Master files, which may be further edited, should be maintained in non-lossy formats. Preserving vector graphics, raster layers, and channels is important for such materials.
  • Originals for landscape formats must be a minimum of 1600 pixels wide and 1200 pixels high. The larger the better. Photographic submissions should be made at the highest resolution the camera is capable of.
  • Submitted wallpapers should be provided in a 16 x 9 aspect ratio when possible.
  • No watermarks, signatures, photographer/creator names, or messages may be included in any part of the work. However if the license allows, and the photo is compelling enough, we could remove watermarks.

and some of organizational nature:

  • Submissions must not contain material that violates or infringes anothers rights, including but not limited to privacy, publicity or intellectual property rights, or that constitutes copyright infringement. If your submissions include or derive from artwork created by other people, please make sure the license of the original work you incorporate is compatible with Fedora and that you are not violating any of the provisions of its license. Just because a work is licensed with a Creative Commons license does not mean it is free to use (make sure you provide attribution to artists that license their work with a CC Attribution clause.)
  • Submission should have the consent and approval of the author or creator
  • Submissions re thereby licensed to the public for reuse under CC-BY-SA unless specifically identified as being licensed by another approved liberal open source license. See a list of approved licenses for Fedora. Note that we can not accept NC or ND submissions.

To get inspiration, you can always look on former submissions, that are my personal favorites from the last contest:

The deadline until you can submit your artwork is the March 19 2015 at 23:59 UTC. The voting will open automatically after this deadline and as many said the period for the voting shall be longer it will be this time open until 25th of March

For the badges hunters, yes there will be badges for it. There will be a badge for submissions, it will be awarded after the examination of the picture if it fits the rules, which you can see above. Another one will be awarded if your submission is chosen and also for the voting process there will be one. So successful submission makes 2 badges ;) For further questions, you can send me a mail and don’t hesitate to ask me for assistance just write me a mail gnokii@fedoraproject.org.

Submit your wallpaper for Fedora 21!

Mai 2nd, 2014 von buergermeister

It is time to open the submission phase for Fedora 21 Supplemental Wallpapers. This time not only for the voting phase but also for the submission phase, we will use our application Nuancier for it. We hope that makes submissions a lot easier. Be aware its the first time we use it so there might pop up some issues.

colors for packager or what you should know if you like to print something

Oktober 10th, 2011 von buergermeister

Today I had a little conversation with somebody about colors. He didnt understand what I meant with an color profile, he simple said to me we cant change anything because pantone is proprietary. The whole thing isnt easy to explain, I think I should begin really on the start. And the start is the difference between the color model RGB and CMYK. I think most have heard of it and know simple how it works.

RGB is an additive color model in which red, green, and blue light is added together in various ways to reproduce a broad array of colors. The opposite model CMYK works as a subtractive color model. But there is another difference, you can create different colors with the different systems. So I made a drawing and hopefully it brings more light to the problem. (Yes I know its not accademically correct).

Yellow is the border for a CMYK color model and the blue one for an RGB model, here sRGB. So you can see there is a difference between the colors you can reach with RGB and CMYK, thats one of the problems. Technically I can create pictures on my computer they cant printed. But you should also see, there are lot of colors they cant be printed with the CMYK model. And thats where Pantone comes in, they begun in the 1950ies to define a color palette called Pantone Matching System. Most of the colors was outside of what you can print with an normal CMYK model, so that colors was unique. One thing is sure when you like to establish a brand, you will like unique colors. Starbucks e.g use Pantone 3425 C for there trademark. Pantone even created colors for some trademarks like that choclate who comes from a lilac cow ;) . There are some competitive systems like HKS or for germans more known should be RAL. Yes the person, has right its intellectual property of Pantone so you cant find it in Inkscape or GIMP and you dont need it often. Such spot colors are mostly printed in a second process, means first will be all process colors printed and then a process print that spot color. So you dont have to give the printing company a file where is the spot color attached to. Mostly its only one color so you can give them another file where the spot color is extra, and that have to be only a black and white graphic. But remember in the other file must the place then be white, because printing on an other color changes the results. And then say to them which spot color should be the black. Best way speak with the printing company, how to do it.
So what are now color profiles? First of all not only humans see colors different even hour devices do that. The individuality of a device is reflected or should be in his color profile. There is an standard for them created from ICC as ISO 15076. So when we talk about printing, we talk about digital printing today. So its an device and it should have an color profile ;) Of course is has :D
Such an color profile can be transferred/translated into another one, thats why you havent to give a printing company not really an CMYK PDF today. Normally you can give them a PDF with an embedded profile. There are some organizations they established some kind of standards. For europeans is more ECI interesting (ECI-Coatedv2.icc would be a common profile), in US there is a thing called SWOP more common an example would be USWebCoatedSWOP.icc
But why its not unimportant to know the target profile before? You remember the differences between RGB amd CMYK and the colors they can created with. There are also differences between some profiles. So to make sure that everything I draw can be printed, I can use the target profile in Inkscape (GIMP cant do that but his little brother CinePaint can) so colors they out of range will be marked in a special color. And really cool it is, when I use color managment and I can see the colors from the target device ;) And there is another point, with every translation there comes little deviations. So the best way is to have no translations between color profiles ;)

openSUSE pic paste

Dezember 4th, 2010 von buergermeister

As some of you know, we have our own paste service – susepaste.org. Miska is responsible for that service and some time ago we had a little conversation, that for me and the other artists is more useful to pasting pictures. But not only for us, some times is a screenshot helpful for others too. So Miska take care of my feature wish and implemented pasting of pictures. He wrote already a blogpost for it. You can use the picture pasting if you select “Image File” at susepast or go directly to http://img.susepaste.org. So nothing new until yet, why then a blogpost again. Its simple today, I tried to use the service and failed. I simple did a screenshot and tried to paste it, and the service told me, its only allowed to past images not bigger then 300k. A simple screenshot, depending from the resolution is bigger as that. So I spoke with Miska again, the problem for the file size is that he have not so lot of space for the service. But he had immediatly a great solution for this and implemented it. You can paste greater pictures now, it depends from the time, the pic should be kept. So for me that works excellent, because mostly I need it for seconds or better until the opposite told me thats what I want or something like that. So now it works really fine for me, thx to Miska.

  • New Planet need more hackagotchis

    April 8th, 2010 von buergermeister

We just have a new styled planet. But when you looking at him right now, there are often such “grey persons“. Some time ago I offered a sevice from the Art-Team to make hackagotchis for persons who cant do them self. I think I should offer that service now again. You need a (new) hackagotchis? Just send a mail with the picture (and maybe when you have special wishes) to the artwork list or to my personal mail and after a few hours you get your new hackagotchi back.

  • Desktopscreenshot with style
