The little bit different Fedora 26 Release Party – Part 3

Juli 25th, 2017 von buergermeister

For day 3 of the preparations for the Fedora 26 Release Party at PNC in Phnom Penh was planned that the different teams present GNOME 3.24, the Python Classroom and LXQT as features of Fedora 26. We have 4 teams for GNOME, 4 Teams for LXQT and 2 teams for the Python Classroom but presenting would be on the end just one team for each feature. I had fears that we can not select today as on Sunday no team had started to create their slides and we would need the two hours we have with each class to prepare them. Opposite to Saturday, where I had the afternoon and no classes would be after the workshop, I had to start at 7.30 in the morning and there would be classes afterwards. So no chance to overdo in time. But the students already did do them as homework by themself, so they did need only a few more minutes to finish them.
We managed to see the presentations and choose which teams will present on Saturday to the public. Especially both of the teams for the Python Classroom Lab, had a very good presentation. The chosen team just did win because their slides looked a bit more profesional and they was a bit more safe in presenting it. The team chosen for GNOME 3.24 hat a small overview about GNOME in general to, which I did like. For a lot of them it will be also the first presentation so there are some rethorical issues but presenting will help them in the future to master such kind of task. Next step now is, that the selected teams rework their slides with the given issues, mostly typos. And on Saturday will be the big day for them.
One sad thing, is I did not manage today to shot a photo of the second class, as we was really a bit under time pressure but I am sure on Saturday will be more time and I will shot some more pictures. So no picture for today but you can be sure it did happen ;)

The little bit different Fedora 26 Release Party – Part 2

Juli 23rd, 2017 von buergermeister

Today was part 2 of the preparing sessions for the Fedora Release Party at PNC on Saturday the 29th of July. So I did spent again the day at this school, I remember a discussion I had at Flock in Prague about the motivation of Asians. There was a saying that you have to motivate them to doing things, I did not agree at that time and I still have this opinion. Whenever I did work with the young people here they allways doing it with lot of passion, yes they are take longer to understand complex things and it is harder for them but they allways if they do something they do it with a lot of motivation. Like today, the first class did still work as the second class was already waiting before the door and the second class did not stop me, so we did overdraw the time for more as 1.5 hours and they still did work as I left them.
Its a big thing we try to achieve, I already told you in part one most of them have never seen a computer before so the knowledge is not that deep. So when it comes to the Python Classroom Feature, they come with question like what is Docker and what is Vagrant and what now is Containerization. Also on the other topics, mostly they use windows so the division between and Desktop Environment and the actually Operating System is not clear to them and must be explained. As we started plan this event we calculated 3 days a 4 hours for each class but through the lack of available computers, we have only 25 we can go with one class at once. What means first class only 2 hours and the second class is more lucky as we can overdraw. (I am sure PNC would be very happy about hardware donations). All teams are now in a stage that they have figured out what all the features are and what they do and have made at least a plan on paper, what they want to put onto the slides. On Tuesday we wanted to do normally the selection process but I fear we have at least to use one hour for each class to prepare the slides, which leaves us one hour to test the teams. Lets see if it works out, if not we might have to do it on Saturday in the morning.

In general I got some nice feedback from the students, yes Linux and Fedora is totally new to them, so that you have a complete environment installed with an Office Suite, video player, music player and all of the things you might need for your daily needs in working with a computer is for some amazing and they did like it. To the LXQT spin, well there is one problem GNOME has a nice application called Software on LXQT you have to use the terminal, for this environment its better there would be a graphical software tool, they are scared of the terminal. We did use the terminal a bit and the most was amazed what you can do with it and how easy it is at all. But a GUI tool would be better to put on to the LXQT spin, especially this DE aims for to ranges of people that ones with older hardware (would be here very often the case) and people who wants more ressources for work. I hope Christian finds a good way to install software in a graphical way on LXQT.
Back to Release Party topic, we will see how far we come on Tuesday or if we have to use the Saturday morning for the selection of the teams who will present.

P.S. I forgot to make a group picture with the first class today as there was a flying change, so just half of the students are shown. The other one I will do on Tuesday.

The little bit different Fedora 26 Release Party – Part 1

Juli 22nd, 2017 von buergermeister

Since Fedora 21 we had not really a Fedora Release Party here in Phnom Penh, Fedora 21 we did at Development Innovations which was wonderful supported by Greta Greathouse the head of this US AID driven institution. But well in Asia an not to mention non-foss oriented company showed a behavior like in Europe 25 years ago. So DI has a new boss, which is lesser FOSS oriented. So we had to find a new place. For Fedora 24 the time frame was to short for me to organize something and Fedora 25 was an epic fail on the Royal University Phnom Penh, which cancelled the party, an hour before it.
So this time I going with Passerelles Numerique as partner, which will not just provide the room and helps eqipement and this is what makes this Release Party a bit different from the “normal” ones.
First of all what is PNC, PNC is a french NGO which helps young under-educated Cambodians to start a career in IT. Its a bit different here as home in Europe, there students of economics are the lower class and the engineers are seen different. Here the rich studying economics or marketing, IT is not from such high value. What means most of the students come from the provinces and have never seen a computer before. I spent now some years here and looking around in the IT companies, I find mostly graduates of PNC, a lot of them went later on to university and did study IT. So it plays a vital role in Cambodias IT sector.

So what is now different, to a normal Release Party. Well on a normal one mostly the Fedora Ambassadors present and here it will be different. Yes I will present of course but there will be other talks which are held from the students. Well now you could think that I am a lazy guy, but it is the opposite. Before we will have next Saturday our Release Party I spent 3 days working with the students on their presentations.

Today the first day of this kind of Fedora Workshop was. There was two classes a 25 students of the first year. We started after an short introduction, with installing Fedora Workstation and the LXQT spin. It took a bit longer as planned, thanks to Murphy but we managed it. We picked 3 features the students will present GNOME 3.24, the LXQT spin and the Python Classroom. For GNOME and LXQT we have 4 teams a 5 students and for the Python Classroom 2 teams. After the installation, the students did start their research, what this feature is about and how to present it the best way. They will continue this for tomorrow the Sunday and on Tuesday there will be a test presentation before a jury.

Document Freedom Day Phnom Penh

März 24th, 2016 von buergermeister

As one of the points we had to revive the Phnom Penh Linux User Group again, was to really do activities on Software-, Hardware- and Document Freedom Day and coming to a regularly meeting, which we have now each first Tuesday in the month at the iCafe. As it is the time for Document Freedom Day (DFD) we will have at our next meeting of course, a topic that fits to it. I will be showing how easily it can be done to use Inkscape for presentation slides, to bring the people to use this instead of flash, pdf or more evil prezi.

The talk will happen 5th of April 2016, 8.00pm at the iCafe (next to Brother88, on 2nd floor) #196z Street 19

InstallParty Phnom Penh

Februar 9th, 2016 von buergermeister

Last Saturday, we had another event with the PPLUG. Back on Software Freedom Day 2015, we agreed that we should have some InstallParties here in Phnom Penh to growth the amount of Linux users. It took us a while until most of us had time for doing such an event. But on 30th January we all had time, a venue was found very fast the National Institute of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Communication Technology (NIPTICT) offered their rooms and supplied us also with drinking water and the necessary equipment.

We started at 1pm and the room filled up very quickly around 30 people showed up, who wanted to know more about Linux and Free Software. We started with an introduction talk what Free Software is and I did later on an introduction to the most common Linux distributions.
We demonstrated later on installation processes and gave an introductions to the file hierarchy and made with them the first steps in their new operating system. Even their choice was not Fedora, its a win for the Linux community in Phnom Penh, especially the Phnom Penh LUG got new life with this event.

Look over the fence – StartUp Weekend Phnom Penh

Februar 6th, 2016 von buergermeister

Linux and Free Software plays in South East Asia not that role as in Europe or North America. To change that at least a bit, I came here. The asian culture plays definitely a role and this was often discussed. But it plays lesser the vital role as we think and as the linked article shows, we will not find an easy an solution for the cultural differences. From my perspective it is lesser necessary that we adopt, the most asians I met are willing to accept the differences and can live with them.
The people in South East Asia have other interests and that is the problem, Google has here more success with his Google Developer Community. There are only a few successful FOSS events and most of them are one timer opposite the BarCamp scene is huge. BarCamp Yangon 14.000, Bangkok 7.000, Phnom Penh and HCMC 5.000 visitors. If you go to them you will meet a lot of tech interested people but you will realize that the interest in start up topics is much higher. I am not the only one who realized that, Pravin made the expirience on his visit to BarCamp Yangon also.

So it was time for me, to digg deeper into the StartUp scene and look if we have common areas and if we could inter-connect so that we have an profit from. So I participated in StartUp Weekend Phnom Penh 2016 as an mentor. What is StartUp Weekend? We would call it Hackfest, people come together to work on a specific problem. On start some people pitch (we would call it lightning talk)  about a problem they want to solve and then people can vote for it and join that team. Then they work on the problem with the target to build out a business with it and on the end they have an final pitch again, before a jury.

On this StartUp Weekend 2 of the idea was directly open source related, but both of them do not understand some principles of the open source and free software world and for that will be lesser successful. But there was other interesting ideas of technical nature. One was the idea to uniting different smart cards into one, but later on became, because of the limited storage on a magnet card, an smart phone app and solved the problem just partly. The other one started as an app from the begin on. All in all there was 11 teams, with ideas like student card, and idea about used books, an medical consultation app for the people living in the provinces and some others more.

So there are overlaps with the free software community, especially there are special editions for developer. In this ones we should engage, to win new users and contributors. We have to go some other ways in Asia, that is for sure. All in all it was an interesting experience to look over the fence.

BarCamp Phnom Penh 2015

Oktober 26th, 2015 von buergermeister

Last weekend on 24th and 25th October as it again, the Barcamp in Phnom Penh and I participated this year. The barcamp was as all the years before hosted at the Institute for Technology Cambodia (ITC) and there as a big crowd as I arrived waiting for registration. I found our booth really fast and Leap Sok had already prepared the rollup banner and he also brought the swag which he stored after the Software Freedom Day. I thought we will have enough swag as I brought something from Europe and Harish send also what he had left to Cambodia. But all the swag was gone after 3 hours, it as really hard work handing DVD out and answer all the questions. What is it?, is it really for free?, can I take one? And opposite to Europe and North America, I had a lot of requests for a 32bit version. Besides all the questions I had to answer I gave interviews and met new and old friends. On Sunday I gave the opening talk in the FOSS panel, which was the first time that Barcamp had it. So all in all an sucessul event which ended with a very nice party.

Next year, there should be FUDCon at this event, so some more people from Fedora will be there, helping Fedoras community in Cambodia growing. But its still a year time for that and a lot of other activities will be before it. Next one next weekend, Translation Sprint.

Software Freedom Day 2015 Phnom Penh

September 21st, 2015 von buergermeister

Saturday the 19. September was Software Freedom Day, an worldwide organized day full with events on various places. I participated in the event in Phnom Penh, which was hold at the National Institute of Posts, Telecommunications and ICT (NIPTICT). It was the second time this event was hold in Phnom Penh and at this place and it begins to grow. There was around 100 participants. The event started in the afternoon and was just a single track with various talks. Fedora was presented by Leap Sok who hold an talk “Understanding Software Virtualization” and me with “Fedora.next And Beyond – Fedora For Everybody”. We also distributed arround 100 DVD to the audience, we met also some people who already use Fedora on their computer.
But the best thing that day is, that there was a good outcome for the future of the PPlug, where some changes will come to give this group new life. And also that Open Institute will help us with the Fedora Translation Sprint end of October. So all in all, it was a very nice event.

More you can read in Pockey’s blog, she has also written already an post about the SFD in Phnom Penh.

Wrap-up Cambodia Hellweek

Dezember 1st, 2014 von buergermeister

I am home now since a few days, time to look back and do a wrap-up, what I have done during my days in Cambodia. My schedule was really packed and I was tired on the last days. Next time I will plan a day off, for recreation.

It all started with the Release Party Phnom Penh, followed by the FAD APAC, the others could spent some more time on sunday evening together but I had to go to bed as the next day I was in Smallworld for an workshop. One of the days started really as adventure, sticking in the elevator. After this workshop I had a day full of meetings for organizing FOSSOGRAPHY next year and I also had an meeting with Khiev Sopheaktra, lecturer at Royal University Phnom Penh. The next day I had an Inkscape workshop for NGO at Development Innovations. During the next day I sit together with Chantra Be and Somvannda Kong helping them putting together ther FUDCon bid and in the evening I had the OpenMovieNight. Next day I had another Join Fedora Workshop.

I think I moved a lot in Phnom Penh, Fedora becomes more and more known and we also find more and more friends there. The Fedora community in Cambodia is growing. But there was also moved a lot for APAC region during FAD, they have a budget plan now for next year, Ambassador Shirts are rolling and some things more….

Inkscape Workshop Phnom Penh

November 21st, 2014 von buergermeister

I had yesterday the opportunity to give an Inkscape workshop at Development Innovations Cambodia in Phnom Penh. The participatns was only from several NGO’s, so called multiplicators and it turned out great. One day isnt that much time, to learn enough about Inkscape to use it in a professional way, but you can get at least the foundations to use it and learn more by yourself. But we had a lot of fun together and there was really some talented people amongst the 23 participants and the best two of them had already Fedora stickers on their laptop, so Open Source community in Cambodia begins to grow.

FAD APAC 2014

November 19th, 2014 von buergermeister

FAD APAC 2014, the first of its kind eneded already 3 days ago and I was not enabled to write an report until yet, as I am still in Phnom Penh and have each day a workload to do, with giving workshops, talks and meetings. But now its the time, Siddesh has already pushed out for each day ( day 0, 1 and 2) a nice summary, what things we have done. But here a short summary:

Day 1: this day, we started with me giving an overview as an outsider what I see are the problems of the APAC regions and then everybody had the opportunity to give us an inside view to his country. The rest of the day we spent with planning the budget for next year. I putted together with the help of other people an “asian event” page in our wiki, which we used to plan the budget. It was really a lot of work and the day ended really late, we stood in the DAI offices until past 7pm. So we was really late for dinner, which was definitely nice – to sad for me, to much fish and seafood.

Day 2: We used this day to finish the work on the event planning and then moved over to more problematic topics like production of swag. Thats a little bit more complicated here as I am used to in EMEA, but there is room for improvements, so we talked about the really needed swag, which should be easily accessible for the Ambassadors in the APAC region and how to produce it with good and acceptable prices, we also had to talk about how we deal with the reimbursements for some Ambassadors as transaction fees are to high, I think Siddesh explained it very well in one of his posts, the money value is here in a lot of countries another one, take Cambodia e.g. We came up with some ideas where we can improve but mainly they have to improve there organization how to deal with the costs.

I think this FAD was definitely progress for the APAC Ambassadors and we will see what it brings in the future. But we suceeded not only with the topics of FAD, we had also another thing. As I was here in February/March and gave some talks and awarded gifts for questions the session chair wanted to award some things to people who was Fedora Ambassadors. Why the was not visible as such ones, no Fedora shirt! There was several attempts to produce the same Fedora Ambassadors Shirts as we have in EMEA but it never progressed, but now its done. All the participants took home the shirts for the Ambassadors in their countries, with the list we have we already equipped 40% of the Ambassadors we have with an shirt. For the rest, well if we would know there size……. But look for the anouncement in the next APAC meeting.

We really have to say a BIG thank you for this really great support from Greta Greathouse from Development Innovations Cambodia, for hosting us, we enjoyed really being your guests.

Release Party Phnom Penh

November 16th, 2014 von buergermeister

On friday we had here in Phnom Penh, Release Party for Fedora 21. Yes we know 21 isnt released yet, but we started back in May organizing this event and now at least beta is available and we could show the features. Here in Cambodia just a few people are introduced to Linux and Open Source so Release Party is more to get them and inform them about it, as introducing them to the features of the newest version. But we had a great party, we had around 70 visitors and during the talks a lot of questions. We found definitely new friends in Cambodia and some also are willing to do something for Fedora, so lets see how the “Join Fedora Workshop” turns out next weekend.

But we have also to say thx to some people here and there is in the first place Greta Greathouse from US AID – Development Innovations, who not only gave us the space for the party as also prepared us a really nice food and drinks, so that it became a really nice party after the talks.

But thats enough and now I let the pictures speak:
