15th Anniversary Linuxwochen Vienna

Mai 11th, 2015 von buergermeister

As all the last year in May the event row called Linuxwochen makes it stop in Vienna and I represented Fedora there. This year it was an special event as the Linuxwochen could celebrate their 15th anniversary. And this years event was indeed special, normally this event is compared to others a smaller one as it is from Thursday to Saturday. But this year it was on Thursday already crowded and it looked some more Germans have found their way to Vienna. Also both of the workshop I gave in Vienna was an success and as always filled with people.
Personally I think the exhibition area was this year a nice one to, as Axiom Apertus Beta was presented there, first that this open source camera was presented in public and also Mozilla did show an TV running Firefox (an TV that you can buy, greetings to Ubuntu).
The social event was this year also a nice one, with an special delicious cake. So it was all in all a win to been there personally as for Fedora.

Chemnitzer Linux-Tage 2015

März 24th, 2015 von buergermeister

Last weekend there was Chemnitzer Linux-Tage, after the dead of LinuxTag in Berlin, Germany’s largest event around Linux and Open Source. I got to this event since the begin and it was like always a lot of visitors, even it was a little bit lsser this year as the years before. I had this year als only one talk, together with Robert Scheck.

So I had more time for conversations and the booth, which was as always good vistited. We did as the last 3 years also present an 3D printer but we was not the only ones, s time for a new idea. But the people have still interest in it. So we had a lot of conversations an handed out a lot of DVD and stickers.

P.S. if another Fedora Ambassador needs the slides, they can be found here

Make Fedora 22 Beautiful !

Februar 23rd, 2015 von buergermeister

Time is flying, Fedora 21 is there just 2 months and Fedora 22 alpha is before the door. So it is time to open the Supplemental Wallpaper Contest. We will use again Nuancier Fedoras application fr the submission and the voting. There are also this time some changes, there is now a team of mentors, who look over the submissions and make suggestions how it can be improved. The submission phase is this time much much shorter, you have only until 19th of March to make your submission.

There are some rules of technical nature:

  • Submitted wallpapers must use a format that can be read by software available in Fedora Package Collection. Preferred image formats include SVG and PNG.
  • Master files, which may be further edited, should be maintained in non-lossy formats. Preserving vector graphics, raster layers, and channels is important for such materials.
  • Originals for landscape formats must be a minimum of 1600 pixels wide and 1200 pixels high. The larger the better. Photographic submissions should be made at the highest resolution the camera is capable of.
  • Submitted wallpapers should be provided in a 16 x 9 aspect ratio when possible.
  • No watermarks, signatures, photographer/creator names, or messages may be included in any part of the work. However if the license allows, and the photo is compelling enough, we could remove watermarks.

and some of organizational nature:

  • Submissions must not contain material that violates or infringes anothers rights, including but not limited to privacy, publicity or intellectual property rights, or that constitutes copyright infringement. If your submissions include or derive from artwork created by other people, please make sure the license of the original work you incorporate is compatible with Fedora and that you are not violating any of the provisions of its license. Just because a work is licensed with a Creative Commons license does not mean it is free to use (make sure you provide attribution to artists that license their work with a CC Attribution clause.)
  • Submission should have the consent and approval of the author or creator
  • Submissions re thereby licensed to the public for reuse under CC-BY-SA unless specifically identified as being licensed by another approved liberal open source license. See a list of approved licenses for Fedora. Note that we can not accept NC or ND submissions.

To get inspiration, you can always look on former submissions, that are my personal favorites from the last contest:

The deadline until you can submit your artwork is the March 19 2015 at 23:59 UTC. The voting will open automatically after this deadline and as many said the period for the voting shall be longer it will be this time open until 25th of March

For the badges hunters, yes there will be badges for it. There will be a badge for submissions, it will be awarded after the examination of the picture if it fits the rules, which you can see above. Another one will be awarded if your submission is chosen and also for the voting process there will be one. So successful submission makes 2 badges ;) For further questions, you can send me a mail and don’t hesitate to ask me for assistance just write me a mail gnokii@fedoraproject.org.

Inkscape Workshop Phnom Penh

November 21st, 2014 von buergermeister

I had yesterday the opportunity to give an Inkscape workshop at Development Innovations Cambodia in Phnom Penh. The participatns was only from several NGO’s, so called multiplicators and it turned out great. One day isnt that much time, to learn enough about Inkscape to use it in a professional way, but you can get at least the foundations to use it and learn more by yourself. But we had a lot of fun together and there was really some talented people amongst the 23 participants and the best two of them had already Fedora stickers on their laptop, so Open Source community in Cambodia begins to grow.

Release Party Phnom Penh

November 16th, 2014 von buergermeister

On friday we had here in Phnom Penh, Release Party for Fedora 21. Yes we know 21 isnt released yet, but we started back in May organizing this event and now at least beta is available and we could show the features. Here in Cambodia just a few people are introduced to Linux and Open Source so Release Party is more to get them and inform them about it, as introducing them to the features of the newest version. But we had a great party, we had around 70 visitors and during the talks a lot of questions. We found definitely new friends in Cambodia and some also are willing to do something for Fedora, so lets see how the “Join Fedora Workshop” turns out next weekend.

But we have also to say thx to some people here and there is in the first place Greta Greathouse from US AID – Development Innovations, who not only gave us the space for the party as also prepared us a really nice food and drinks, so that it became a really nice party after the talks.

But thats enough and now I let the pictures speak:

Upcoming FOSSASIA 2014

Februar 17th, 2014 von buergermeister

In a week I will start a journey to an event in Asia called FOSSASIA. This event will take this year place from 28th February to 2nd of March at Norton University in Phnom Penh/Cambodia It will be a long trip for me spending 47 hours in planes and airports but I think its worth it. We will have an track on this event only dedicated to Fedora related talks.

Fedora Track Friday 28th February 13.00 – 16.30

  • Fedora Next: An Overview: by Truong Anh Tuan,
  • The Ultimative Fedora A-Z Talk: by Gnokii,
  • Introduction to FOSS techniques (aimed at students): by Sarup Banskota, 1 hour workshop
  • Testing Fedora cloud images in Eucalyptus private cloud: by Kushal Das,
  • 7 Ways To Contribute To Fedora Without Programming Skills: by Gnokii,
  • Fedora Ambassadors Program: by Truong Anh Tuan,

Fedora Track Saturday 1st March 9.00 – 16.30

On Sunday, we will have the whole day an hackfest

where interested people can do together with us, there first steps as Fedora contributors. Kushal will work with the people interested in packaging, Tuan with that for becoming an Ambassador and I will work with that interested in doing design tasks for Fedora. I am really interested what comes out of that hackfest and how many new contributors we can win there.

I will also give an Inkscape workshop on the event, which isnt scheduled yet, so Fedora has really a big participation on FOSSASIA this year. I will stay a little bit longer in Cambodia, but not for holiday. I will give some workshops at Smallworld Cambodia and for Webessentials and I will be back right on time for Chemnitzer Linux-Tage.

LibreGraphicsMeeting 2013

LibreGraphicsMeeting 2013 day 2

April 14th, 2013 von buergermeister

The post for this day took me a while to write because on the third day there was the party and thanks to GIMP we had a lot of free beer there. But before the party was we had another day with talks, workshops and hackfests/disciussions to make. I had my second talk about open source movies after my talk Nina Paley had her talk asking where a useful free animation tool is.

The rest of the day I worked together with Boudewijn Rempt and Gustav Gonzalez on ideas how Tupi and Krita can be work together. We found some bugs in the Tupi code, which will be fixed soon and that will make import more faster. We also worked together with Jon Nordby from Mypaint on ideas to have a common format for brushes so Krita, MyPaint, GIMP, Tupi and Synfig could work with the same brushes.

LibreGraphicsMeeting Madrid

März 14th, 2013 von buergermeister

As the schedule for talks and workshops of this years edition of LibreGraphicsMeeting is now published, its time to talk about. For those who dont know LibreGraphicsMeeting is the annual meeting of most of the graphic tools of the free software world. This year LGM will take place in Madrid from 10th to 13th of April and is combined with Interactivos?’13 of LibreGraphicsResearchUnit which will start on 13th and end on 27th of April.

Personally I will give a talk about Fedora Design Suite and a second one about Open Source Movies. In general there is a lot this year about animation software Synfig Studio workshop and also Tupi is there, interesting is also the talk of Nina Paley, because she is a well known animator. But I am not the only Fedorian who has a talk there, Maria “Tatica” Leandro has an Localization workshop as she works on the translation of Darktables User Manual since a few weeks. Only sad thing here is she had to borrow money to buy the flight ticket, as we had not enough on the pledgie, so we still need some support. Richard Hughes will tell the truth about display color calibration. Jakub Steiner will talk about localized animations with blender, python and mallard. So it will be definitly an interesting conference. Btw. the LibreGraphicsMeeting has also a pledgie collecting money for the conference.

Ubuntu started jetzt also seinen eigenen “XServer” namens Mir.

Call For Supplemental Wallpaper Submissions

Februar 20th, 2013 von buergermeister

The Design Team is still working on the default wallpaper and design for Fedora’s next version, called “Schrödingers Cat“. We had two public brainstorm sessions and a lot of nice ideas came out: if you want to participate, Mizmo collected the ideas in a Pinterest board.

But that is not the only way you can contribute to Fedora 19. In addition to the default wallpaper, each Fedora version has a package with so called ‘Supplemental Wallpapers,’ submitted by the community. From these submissions, the Design Team traditionally chooses the best (here you can find the for Fedora 18 chosen ones.) This time, not only the design team will vote for the best ones – all Fedora contributors can vote. But first, we need your submissions. So how do you do that?

First there are some rules. Here are the technical specifications:

Now here are the organizational rules:

  • Submissions must not contain material that violates or infringes another’s rights, including but not limited to privacy, publicity or intellectual property rights, or that constitutes copyright infringement.

The deadline until you can submit your artwork is the March 31 2013 at 23:59 UTC. You can submit your material directly to the wiki: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F19_Artwork/Submissions/Supplemental_Wallpapers. For further questions, you can send me a mail gnokii@fedoraproject.org. We are looking forward to many great submissions…

LibreGraphicsMeeting Campaign

Februar 5th, 2013 von buergermeister

In october I started a campaign, collecting some money for some people so that they can go to the next LibreGraphicsMeeting in Madrid. So the deadline for two of the persons is very near, only 10 days. At 15th the have to apply for an visa and for that they need the flight tickets and an accomodation. So far we collected 721 US$ on pledgie, that are 660 US$ after the fees. It’s not enough to send one of the 3 persons. As I stated before Gustav Gonzalez goes first but for him we need arround 100 US$ so that we can book the flights. For him the LibreGraphicsMeeting becomes more important as before. Some might know Nina Paley and/or her famous “Sita Sings The Blues“, four days ago she wrote a blogpost willing to migrate to an open source tool in the future, if there would be one. As you can see in the comments, nobody considers Tupi as tool. A lot of the mentioned tools arrent open source, wtf. Nina himself will go to the next LibreGraphicsMeeting and submited a talk there as an plea for an easy to use open source 2D animation tool, what of an coincidence. The only thing what is between a meeting of award-winning animator Nina Paley and Gustav as the author of an easy to use 2D animation tool are 100 US$.

Call for Supplemental Wallpapers

August 19th, 2012 von buergermeister

Fedora brings in addition to the great design standard wallpaper always supplementary wallpapers. That wallpapers are collected from the community and the best 15 of them are chosen from the Design Team and packaged. Now its time to collect that supplementary wallpapers for Fedora 18 “Spherical Cow“.

There are some restrictions for what can be submitted some are technical nature:

  • Must use a format that can be read by software available in Fedora Package Collection. Preferred image formats include SVG and PNG. Master files, which may be further edited, should be maintained in non-lossy formats. Preserving vector graphics, raster layers, and channels is important for such materials.

  • No watermarks, signatures, photographer/creator names, or messages may be included in any part of the work. However if the license allows, and the photo is compelling enough, we could remove watermarks.

some are more organizational nature:

  • Must be covered by the Contributor License Agreement. We cannot accept contributions from individuals who have not signed the CLA in the Fedora Account System. The CLA allows us to properly license artwork submissions for distribution with Fedora and other Fedora projects.
  • Must not contain material that violates or infringes another’s rights, including but not limited to privacy, publicity or intellectual property rights, or that constitutes copyright infringement.
  • Should have the consent and approval of the author or creator
  • Are thereby licensed to the public for reuse under CC-BY-SA unless specifically identified as being licensed by another approved liberal open source license. See a list of approved licenses for Fedora

The deadline until you can submit your artwork is the 5th of September 2012 23:59 UTC. You can submit your material directly to the wiki: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F18_Artwork/Submissions/Supplemental_Wallpapers. day +1 LGM/LinuxWochen

Mai 8th, 2012 von buergermeister

May the 3rd was the second day of Libre Graphics Meeting and the first one of Linuxwochen Vienna. So in the foyer of the UAS Technikum opened the exhibition area and also DrupalDay.at and the first talks of Linuxwochen helped to fill the area with people. Of course there was a Fedora booth at the exhibition and it was the biggest one. I brought the table cloth and one of the rollups to Vienna, and also what was left from FOSDEM on stickers. Mizmo brought also some stickers and flyers and also some DesignSuite DVD. Zoltan brought cheatcubes, DVD and an OLPC. So the booth was well prepared. The Fedora booth was also photographed from the Der Standard and published on his online platform. As you can see not only the both was photographed, also Taticas keynote was topic. She had later an interview with Der Standard and got there own article. The topic on migration to Linux is really from interest for the people in Vienna, as the migration in that city failed and they have to spent now again every year a lot of mon€y for licenses. On the end the topic was from so much interest, that the organizers decided to give a second slot to Tatica speaking about the situation arround Open Source in Latinamerica. Together we managed the spontaneously additional talk.

On the Libre Graphics Meeting side Mizmo and Emichan had their talk: An awesome FLOSS design collaboration workflow presenting SparkleShare, Magic Mockup, GlitterGallery and DesignHub. I didnt see a lot of talks on LGM on this day, but this one I didnt miss. The day on the event ended with an traditional q/talk from q/uintessenz. The topic on that panel discussion was “Open Content, Free Culture” the guests was Pete Ippel, Ricardo Lafuente and Ana Carvalho who work together on Libre Graphics Magazin and the guy who does always Free & Open Movie Nights, I think he is called gnokii ;) So an second additional talk at this day. We didnt went out for dinner this evening and I prepared a dinner in our appartment, “Zwiebelkuchen” and 2 nice bottle of wine.

LinuxTag 2012

LibreGraphicsMeeting – Schedule

April 10th, 2012 von buergermeister

The program schedule for LibreGraphicsMeeting in Vienna is now published. If you are intereste, you can find the comlete schedule here. On 2nd May the first day of LibreGraphicsMeeting the main topics are Color Management and reverse engineering of some file formats. On that day, I will give my first talk “Taxi DB – Call A Cab To Bring The Colors” about the internet color profile database – Taxi. It’s mostly the same talk as I gave on FOSDEM in february. This day will be really interesting.
On the second day Mizmo and Emichan will have there first talk – “An awesome FLOSS design collaboration workflow” I am very sure the talk who follows that talk – “The importance of new tools to enable collective design process” fits exactly to it.
On friday, I am really interested in the talk of Johan Engelen about -”Powerstroke: variable stroke width in Inkscape” hopefully I can visit it, but I fear not because I submitted also 2 workshops to Linuxwochen and after my experience they will scheduled on friday and saturday. And on friday it has to be scheduled in the morning because on 3pm I have together with Mizmo and Allan Day another talk – “Doing Design In The World Of FLOSS”. Nicu Buculei will also have at that day an talk – “Free Culture meets Free Software: Wiki Loves Monuments”
Saturday if mostly animation programs like SynfigStudio and Tupi topic. But talks like “Remake – build system for animation projects” are also interesting. But I will have no time visiting them, first as I said I will have an workshop on Linuxwochen and at 1pm I will have an workshop – “Open Source, Just Works – The LGM Book Workshop” where I try with visitors of LGM and Linuxwochen to produce a book with the papers of the talks from LibreGraphicsMeeting. The idea behind that workshop is simple, Linuxwochen always asked me for an workshop about Scribus. The problem with this is for me simple, you can sit down with the participants and doing something with Scribus and hopefully they see how it works. I have another opinion on that, I always doing my workshops in the way to give the participants a target, which is useful. So later the participants can be proud of what they have done and see that they can doing things with free tools, its the most what you can reach in a 3-4 hours workshop. If I reach the target the book will be published and available at amazon and all participants will named in it. The profit flows back to LibreGraphicsMeeting and will be used for covering the travel costs for the 2013 edition of LGM.
Some might have the question where on LGM comes Tatica in, because there was a donation campaign for her travelling to LGM Vienna. First of all we reached mostly the goal of 2.500US$ and a few weeks ago we booked the flights to Vienna. We got a cheaper flight as we calculated and 3 weeks ago I booked an appartment which brings the costs for accomodation also down to arround 200€ instead of the calculated 300€. So Tatica will participate on LibreGraphicsMeeting and Linuxwochen, where she submitted 2 talks “One Of The World’s Largest FLOSS Events – FLiSoL” and “Venezuela – An Entire Country Migrates To Linux” especially in the 2nd one are the organizers interested, because Vienna had like Munich his own Linux distribution once but the migration failed. So she will have definitly an talk at Linuxwochen. We will know it, when the program of Linuxwochen comes out. So Fedora will have an good and very visible participation on LibreGraphicsMeeting. Fedora of course will also participate on Linuxwochen, which is on same time and building, about that later more.

Tupi – 2D Animationsprogramm

movie session @ DevConf.cz

Februar 8th, 2012 von buergermeister

DevConf.CZ comes up and as Radek Vokál wrote, there will be a movie session on the end of the second day. I will doing that session, its not my first time I do that. I started with that kind of event as a social event on Chemnitzer Linux-Tage and did it there 2 years. But I did that also on LinuxTag in a session and on openSUSE Conference. So what is it? It’s a mix between a talk and a movie show, of course I show a lot of movies in there. But I explain also what is an Open Source Movie and that has nothing to do with what tools they are made, as Radek wrote. So its an session where you can just enjoy some funny movies, and the best thing if you like them I can give you the movies ;)

Pinta -Bildbearbeitungsspartaner

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
