Retrospective Flock / day -1 & day 0

August 14th, 2014 von buergermeister

Flock ended some days ago and its time to write an post about it.

Day -1:

An event starts always mostly an day before it, with the travel. This time it was nearly a home game for me, just 3 hrs train ride. I was quite a time before my train would start on the station. I took one earlier as planned, because this one had already an delay of 15 minutes what means the train after would be also delayed and I had right. So I arrived as planned in Dresden and had only a few minutes before the train to Prague would arrive, but this one is always delayed. With the train arrived also Christoph Wickert and Luc de Louw and we continued together. After arrival, I exchanged fast some money and took the metro to the hostel. I managed to go together with Sarup,Jiri and Jaroslav to an pub for something to eat and of course a beer, later Christoph joined us. Couldnt sleep that well this night as my room mate was still missing and there was only one key for the room.

Day 0:

The first day of Flock was the day with the most topics I was interested in, I even had to decide. I started of course with the keynote, well the topic was covered so many times before. After getting the badge and other stuff I went to “Better Presentation of Fonts in Fedora“, I definitely agree with Praveen that there something can be done better but on some things I do not agree.

I am definitely one of the users who have a lot of fonts installed. Mostly I get from somebody an SVG with an font used in it which I dont have and then I look if it is packaged, mostly it is as the file comes in 80% from a Fedora user. So I do not care how it looks, I just want to see the design in the same way as the one who gave it to me.
Second use case is I want to design something and search for fonts that could be used. There definitely an packaged font makes no sense as I do not see it before I have it installed. There are two other options, I start “fonts” which shows me the installed ones, even with an example or I search online for a new font. Now Pravin suggests we build our own online service for fonts, should we do that? How would be using OFL instead as its already there publishing free licensed fonts, I am sure they would accept when we ask them for RPM packages so that an package can be removed as easy as it was installed. We dont have to build our own service for that.
But there are other problems around fonts that should be addressed, one of the problems I have fonts installed which are CC-NC licensed. Its always hard time for me, to find it out. Yes fonts shows me the meta data if I select an font. Would be much more easier, if I could say “show me fonts with free license that I can use for commercial things”. So this things have to be discussed more, not talking about that I very often search for an font which has the right glyphs ;)

Next talk on my plan was Chris Roberts and the Fedora Magazine, that is just amazing what did happen with this part of Fedora during the last year and how engaged Chris in it.
Next interesting thing was Sarup Banskota “The curious case of a Fedora Freshman“. During that talk an interesting discussion happend to sad we didnt grab an empty slot later the week to continue on it. It was how we can be better in getting new contributors. To sad we had to stop the discussion.
After this talk I heard Jiri Eischmann’s talk About the Ambassador Status and then I move to Chris Roberts and Marie Nordins talk about Badges & Badges Design.

and then PARRRTY

Flock -1

August 5th, 2014 von buergermeister

As always an event starts with the trip, this year for me a very short one. Just an 3hrs train ride on a route I have travelled many times before. But its still enjoyable as the train goes until Prague along the Elbe river, means you cross the whole Saxonian Switzerland one of Europes most beautiful landscapes. And what is the best, can enjoy the trip again with fellow Fedorians. In german, we would say “ich mach dann mal die Flocke” ;)

Augsburger Linux-Info-Tag 2014

April 8th, 2014 von buergermeister

On 22. March there was again Augsburger Linux-Infotag, an event I normally not visit. He is to small and the travel to it is to complicated for me. But this year I did go there to represent Fedora with an booth, I was not alone Björn Esser was the event owner and Raphael Groner did also help on the booth.
As I said the event is a small one with just a few hundred visitors but this year there was at the same day open house of the university so there was more people. We brought only a few DVD and swag and the DVD was gone soon. We reached through the open house event people who not using Linux and free software and became interested.

Chemnitzer Linux-Tage 2014

April 7th, 2014 von buergermeister

It’s time for another event report. The weekend from 15. and 16 March there was CLT in Chemnitz and I was there. It was now the 15th CLT and it was like all the years before but from my point of view there was lesser visitors as in the year before. But there was a long queue in the morning, people waiting for entry.

I had on saturday in the morning an workshop about using darktable and it was a mess. First I was totally jetlagged and my brain was somewhere else but not in my body where it belongs and the technical problems I had to face brought me really out of my concept. Window geometry of darktable didnt switch to the screen resolution that is no fun and the projector showed very different colors.

Everything else, was the same like all the years before, same people so not much to write about it.

Last day in Cambodia

März 10th, 2014 von buergermeister

Today is my last day in Cambodia and a exhausting but also cool time will end. The first days I was at FOSSASIA as I wrote in my blog before (day 1, 2, 3 ), Tuan and Uditha did also write about the event. For Fedora it was a very successful event, we was enabled to find 6 new contributors, for Ambassadors and translation. After the event we went together with the night bus to Siem Reap, for an very short visit to Angkor, you cannot been in Cambodia without seeing it. After it I came back to Phnom Penh, where I had 2 workshops about using Inkscape. One at Smallworld Cambodia and one at WebEssentials.asia. I found a lot of new friends and one the one side I would like to stay longer as there is still need for more such things here. But on the other side, I am happy to go home and be the next weekend at my favorite event Chemnitzer Linux-Tage.

FOSSASIA 2014 – Day 1

Februar 28th, 2014 von buergermeister

I am already 3 days in Phnom Penh now, but I was always to busy to write an post or my blog. I was a little bit tired on the first day after the 48 hours of the trip, which lead me through 4 different countries. But I had a warm welcome after the arrival on the airport where I was fetched from a volunteer of FOSSASIA who gave me a package with lot of informations and an tuk tuk was already aranged which brought me to the hotel. After an shower I managed to find Kushal and his wife and we had a late lunch together and we even had time for a small photo walk on the Riverwalk, with the kings palace and the Tonle river. But the next day, was more for recreation and finish the talks and waiting for the others to arrive. So we had all together a nice Fedora lunch at the River Crown, which has an nice view.

Today, there was the first day of three of FOSSASIA and it started not well, as there was in the morning a lot of short talks of all the suporters and each of them took more time as granted on the end there was one hour delay in the talks. Also Fedora had on this session an talk as we sponsoring the event and are btw the biggest participation on speakers at the event, we have 3 days long or own track. So Tuan did take that job and introduced Fedora to the audience. Later we had a lot of talks more, Tuan spoke about Fedora.next, Sarup showed ways how you can contribute to FOSS, Kushal showed how easy you can use Fedora cloud images and I did also 2 talks, one was an introducion to Fedora as A-Z talk and the second one was a nice follow up to Sarups talk, how you can contribute to Fedora.

Later we went to the social event, which was really nice as it was on a boat on the Tonle river, what means fresh air. After the dinner and boat tour we went back to the hotel and now I am already tired enough. Tomorrow will be another day with for me starting in the morning with an 2 hours Inkscape workshop and later I will have another Fedora related talk in our track.

LibreGraphicsMeeting 2014

Februar 20th, 2014 von buergermeister

In April there will be the 9th edition of LibreGraphicsMeeting, this year in Leipzig/Germany. LibreGraphicsMeeting is the anual gathering of most free software applications for doing graphics. Applications like GIMP, Scribus, Inkscape and daktable meet there for sharing there ideas and work together to improve there software. Of course some people from Fedora and RedHat are amongst them, to present there things:

  • David Tardon will present together with Fridrich Strba and Valek Filippov – Digital legacy preservation project — news from the reverse and straight engineering world. The effords LibreOffice made during the last years in re-engineering graphical file formats.
  • Richard Hughes will of course introdce his newest toy the open source spectrometer – Building an OpenHardware Spectrograph for Color Profiling in Linux
  • Daniel Berrange will show his developments of Entangle – Tethered camera control and capture with Entangle
  • Pierre-Yves Chibon and myself, will show the development of Nuancier, Fedoras application for collecting and vote for the supplemental wallpapers – Nuancier- Community generated and selected artwork

  • and last Onyeibo Oku will speak about free software for architects – FreeCAD’s “Arch” Workbench: Bridging the Gap in the Linux (AEC) Design Tool-set

Besides that a lot of other cool things will be presented what you can find out in the schedule. There is only one problem. LibreGraphicsMeeting needs some support from the community to make this event happen.

Upcoming FOSSASIA 2014

Februar 17th, 2014 von buergermeister

In a week I will start a journey to an event in Asia called FOSSASIA. This event will take this year place from 28th February to 2nd of March at Norton University in Phnom Penh/Cambodia It will be a long trip for me spending 47 hours in planes and airports but I think its worth it. We will have an track on this event only dedicated to Fedora related talks.

Fedora Track Friday 28th February 13.00 – 16.30

  • Fedora Next: An Overview: by Truong Anh Tuan,
  • The Ultimative Fedora A-Z Talk: by Gnokii,
  • Introduction to FOSS techniques (aimed at students): by Sarup Banskota, 1 hour workshop
  • Testing Fedora cloud images in Eucalyptus private cloud: by Kushal Das,
  • 7 Ways To Contribute To Fedora Without Programming Skills: by Gnokii,
  • Fedora Ambassadors Program: by Truong Anh Tuan,

Fedora Track Saturday 1st March 9.00 – 16.30

On Sunday, we will have the whole day an hackfest

where interested people can do together with us, there first steps as Fedora contributors. Kushal will work with the people interested in packaging, Tuan with that for becoming an Ambassador and I will work with that interested in doing design tasks for Fedora. I am really interested what comes out of that hackfest and how many new contributors we can win there.

I will also give an Inkscape workshop on the event, which isnt scheduled yet, so Fedora has really a big participation on FOSSASIA this year. I will stay a little bit longer in Cambodia, but not for holiday. I will give some workshops at Smallworld Cambodia and for Webessentials and I will be back right on time for Chemnitzer Linux-Tage.

I saw the future

Februar 11th, 2014 von buergermeister

Last weekend was 6th edition of DevConf.cz in Brno and I was there. How it was can be described in just one word – awesome. It was not my first time on this event and it becomes more and more to an – you have to be there. On Friday and Saturday I enjoyed only a few talks as I am lesser the technical person, it was interesting to see that QA people think now about design & usability matters. One of the most interesting things for me was Fedora.next, I was not so much worried about it that but the few fears I had are resolved now.

Besides that there was a lot of time to socialize, meet people and resolve problems, grab swag for the next Fedora events and other things. On the end I can say, I looking into an bright future for Fedora and DevConf.cz played a role in it.

Looking back

Dezember 31st, 2013 von buergermeister

It’s the time in the year where you look back what you have done in the past year. I did that some years before in my blog to, so what have I done this year. The first thing I notice for myself I visited this year not that much events as before. Past years I had mostly 13 a year or even 15, this year it was only 8. Second thing I noticed, the a lot of them are longer then only the weekend, 3 events was 4 days long and one 3 so I spent a whole working month on events. With the travel its the whole month then or better more as I spent 17 days directly with travelling for them.
I visited in March Chemnitzer Linux-Tage an event which is a home game, in April I was in Madrid for LibreGraphicsMeeting, In May there was in Vienna the Linuxwochen and in Berlin the LinuxTag, in August I was at the first Flock in Charleston and in Cologne for FrOSCon, in October I had an horrible trip to Heidelberg for german Ubucon and the last event I did was in Oberhausen the OpenRheinRuhr. At the events I had 6 talks and delivered also 8 workshops and at Flock an hackfest. What I did also this year is some open workshops on different cities about Inkscape, which take a whole weekend. In January I started with one in Essen in Linuxhotel, I had 2 in Berlin, one in Cologne and Hamburg and one at my home town. So on the end 5 weekends out of home again.
Besides that I found some time to work for Fedora I did some banners and shirts and such stuff and tangled the supplemental wallpapers again, this year 2 times. Of course I took part in the creation of the default wallpaper. I am very happy the my Flock hackfest did result in Nuancier, which we used in a early stage for the voting for F20 supplemental wallpapers. Pingou spent some time during Christmas on it, so hopefully for F21 we can use it also for the submission. So it was a (sometimes to) busy year for me.

OpenRheinRuhr 2014

November 24th, 2013 von buergermeister

Some days ago I was on OpenRheinRuhr, an event in which I participate since the begin. Last year there was unfortunately no OpenRheinRuhr as the place was taken by another exhibition. I manned together with Felix and Christian the Fedora booth and besides of that I had a talk and a workshop in the schedule.

My talk was about the status of open source animation programs, where in this year a lot of things happend. Hopefully the upwind that area has right now, tails not off to soon and will show effect. The workshop I had was this time not about Inkscape like always, it was about Blender, the time was really short so the workshop became more an demonstration. What actually turned out really nice. Both talk was workhop was well visited and a lot of questions and interesting conversations came up after them. Think I will do OpenRheinRuhr next year again.

Ubucon 2013

Last weekend I was at the german edition of Ubucon, it was not my first one. Of course it was recognizable that I am not from Ubuntu as I weared like before my Fedora Ambassador Shirt, but I was not the only one from outside of the Ubuntu world, there was also Martin Gräßlin the KWin developer, who comes from openSUSE. That we are not from the Ubuntu Community was recognized from Kristian Kißling editor of the German Linuxmagazin and so he mentioned us in his article about the event. I had some interesting conversations on the event, hopefully next year I will be not the only Fedora guy there. There is definitely place to show e.g. RPM packaging and the visitors of Ubucon are the open people of the Ubuntu community, they are willing to learn also about such things, the program was generally not very Ubuntu related more Linux and FLOSS related. So next year I think I will be again going to this event.

Retrospective Flock

August 19th, 2013 von buergermeister

First Flock is history now and I am back home now. Back on work as next event is end of this week and there are some other important things to do also. But is time to write a little report how Flock was. I am not a big friend of to write down I visited this talk or that one. Personally I submitted only a hackfest for the Supplemental Wallpaper. There wasnt a lot of people but the right one at this hackfest.
The problem we face right now or since the begin is, that the wiki isnt thought for collecting wallpapers and a lot of people have problems with it, as the wiki doesnt create thumbnails anymore when the filesize is to big (thats often the case) and the second problem is that we opened the voting to all Fedora contributors and our voting system isnt thought for such amount of voting possibilities.
So we discussed solutions and it turned out, a application would be the best solution for it and we came further as we have done the mockups for the application. Jennifer Kotler, who worked on Fedora Badges took that task and really finished it on Flock, as we agreed to come together on Monday in a session again, we had the mockups there and had time to discuss it with the Infrastructure Team and got some good points from them.

Now there are only to fix some small things and the application has to be coded and we can continue with the Supplemental Wallpapers in a more open way. I think it will not be ready for Fedora 20 at least not for the whole process, but hopefully for the voting. But with Fedora 21 we will have it. So just with that achievement Flock was an success, but there was more. I met a lot of people, some I did know for years via IRC, a lot of conversations and new ideas. So Flock was really great.

LinuxTag 2013

Mai 27th, 2013 von buergermeister

LinuxTag 2013 is over now since two days and most of us are back home. So it’s time to write down a conclusion. LinuxTag was this year a little bit of everything, good things and bad things. First of all the area where the exhibition always was, was not the same anymore. It was down in the cellar. That is positive as negative. For the exhibitors its nicer as normally it was always hot weather and hot inside, in the cellar is more cool. The rooms for the talks was also moved to the cellar, so all of the rooms except for the workshop and meeting rooms was on one floor. That was really visible during the breaks, there was definitely more people inside the exhibition area. So on the end we gave out twice more of DVD. As we had again a 3D printer on the booth we had a lot of visitors, they still attract the people. Opposite to that OLPC and RaspberryPi don’t are that interesting to the people anymore.

We had a lot of conversations on the booth, most of course was about 3D printing and what it has to do with Fedora, but like always there was some conversations about how to get a special software into the Fedora repositories. We was a lot of people on the booth and we needed them all so thanks go to Jens Kühnel, Dominic Hopf, Sebastian Mäki, Jiri Eischmann, Miro Hroncok, Francesco Vollero and especially to Alexandra Fedorova (who did notice there is a event on thursday and joined as just for saturday).

FrOSCon 2013 is coming

Mai 14th, 2013 von buergermeister

FrOSCon has called for talks and projects a while ago. Fedora has requested a booth already but there is still some time left (9 days) for submit talks and workshops. Last year we had also an DevRoom we shared with Mageia, openSUSE and Centos where we did a schedule with talks about RPM packaging. The question is now, do we want a DevRoom again and what we can do with it. Any suggestions are welcome.

Chemnitzer Linux-Tage 2013

März 18th, 2013 von buergermeister

Last weekend 15th edition of Chemnitzer Linux-Tage happend. Of course I was there as it is an event in my home town and I had as always an workshop about Inkscape there and an talk, this year about Tupi the animation software. My workshop was with 25 people filled, not so much as in the last years but still a good result. My talks was also good visited, but I was not so happy, as my prepared files made me some trouble.

The booth was well visited, the 3D printer Miro brought was a highlight and a lot of people was interested. So it was definitely a good idea to present that feature of Fedora 19. The little Fedora chips we printed was popular.
