InstallParty Phnom Penh

Februar 9th, 2016 von buergermeister

Last Saturday, we had another event with the PPLUG. Back on Software Freedom Day 2015, we agreed that we should have some InstallParties here in Phnom Penh to growth the amount of Linux users. It took us a while until most of us had time for doing such an event. But on 30th January we all had time, a venue was found very fast the National Institute of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Communication Technology (NIPTICT) offered their rooms and supplied us also with drinking water and the necessary equipment.

We started at 1pm and the room filled up very quickly around 30 people showed up, who wanted to know more about Linux and Free Software. We started with an introduction talk what Free Software is and I did later on an introduction to the most common Linux distributions.
We demonstrated later on installation processes and gave an introductions to the file hierarchy and made with them the first steps in their new operating system. Even their choice was not Fedora, its a win for the Linux community in Phnom Penh, especially the Phnom Penh LUG got new life with this event.

Look over the fence – StartUp Weekend Phnom Penh

Februar 6th, 2016 von buergermeister

Linux and Free Software plays in South East Asia not that role as in Europe or North America. To change that at least a bit, I came here. The asian culture plays definitely a role and this was often discussed. But it plays lesser the vital role as we think and as the linked article shows, we will not find an easy an solution for the cultural differences. From my perspective it is lesser necessary that we adopt, the most asians I met are willing to accept the differences and can live with them.
The people in South East Asia have other interests and that is the problem, Google has here more success with his Google Developer Community. There are only a few successful FOSS events and most of them are one timer opposite the BarCamp scene is huge. BarCamp Yangon 14.000, Bangkok 7.000, Phnom Penh and HCMC 5.000 visitors. If you go to them you will meet a lot of tech interested people but you will realize that the interest in start up topics is much higher. I am not the only one who realized that, Pravin made the expirience on his visit to BarCamp Yangon also.

So it was time for me, to digg deeper into the StartUp scene and look if we have common areas and if we could inter-connect so that we have an profit from. So I participated in StartUp Weekend Phnom Penh 2016 as an mentor. What is StartUp Weekend? We would call it Hackfest, people come together to work on a specific problem. On start some people pitch (we would call it lightning talk)  about a problem they want to solve and then people can vote for it and join that team. Then they work on the problem with the target to build out a business with it and on the end they have an final pitch again, before a jury.

On this StartUp Weekend 2 of the idea was directly open source related, but both of them do not understand some principles of the open source and free software world and for that will be lesser successful. But there was other interesting ideas of technical nature. One was the idea to uniting different smart cards into one, but later on became, because of the limited storage on a magnet card, an smart phone app and solved the problem just partly. The other one started as an app from the begin on. All in all there was 11 teams, with ideas like student card, and idea about used books, an medical consultation app for the people living in the provinces and some others more.

So there are overlaps with the free software community, especially there are special editions for developer. In this ones we should engage, to win new users and contributors. We have to go some other ways in Asia, that is for sure. All in all it was an interesting experience to look over the fence.

Successful FAD in Singapore

Dezember 8th, 2015 von buergermeister

During the last weekend the FAD APAC in Singapore did happen and I have to say it was very successful. We completed the budget plan for next year in just one day. We also had some time to figure out why APAC did this year spent the budget not as planned and what we do with the left money. We want to spent some money for the upcoming BarCamp Yangon, which is the biggest tech-related event in Asia and some money we want to bring the indonesian Ambassadors together to give this community new life.

We also had enough time to speak about how we can improve the way we work together to move the Fedora community in APAC forward. The main problem for APAC is that asians are more pro-active and they need a leader and guidance, and this lacks in APAC currently. It is very clear when it comes to the meetings, very often tickets are left out and a lot of time is wasted with discussions but the work is later on not done.

As there is a thing called budget.next coming, we found also the time to speak about this and look, how we can adopt it to the asian needs. In APAC it makes definitely no sense to store rollups and other booth material in a centralized place and a person “stuffs” the booth at events with it. The main purpose for this, we think is have a general overview where our material is and how the condition for it is. So we agreed, that it is for us better to make an overview and making it part of the FAD which should be hold anually to update it. That at least should give an good overview what we have and how it is used. I had already last year the feeling that must be done for APAC and we started at the FAD a table in the wiki (but only the chinese and cambodian made entries so far and now the malaysians) , just to find out what material we have. We also looked forward who can be the person, who becomes the “storyteller” for APAC region.

A clear statement came from all the participants to keeping FUDCon as event for getting the APAC people together and grow in the region, we all agreed that this and also other things has to better communicated from the people of the APAC region, they are to much pro-active in such kind of things, the same is for event reports. There happen a lot of good things in the region but nobody knows about as it is not published.

When it comes to events there it lacks not just on reports later on as also on timing, a lot of events are planned last minutes, which create more problems which would be not there if the Ambassadors would work more planned. If you take a look to the budget plan for the next year, you will see that this time there is a clear event owner, this person becomes more freedom in acting in the budgeted frame but he also get more responsebility in communicating before the event what is going on and it will be part of the regularly meeting to report this.

When it comes to events, there was also agreed that we need more events and activities to activate contributors not just to win new users. So the Ambassadors shall show more activities around the Testing Days or organize BugSquashing Parties. Other possibilities to bring people to do something for Fedora and not just consume it can be Translation Sprints, Wallpaper Hunts or the Hour of Code. That all will lead to more activities as an fact is, if the Ambassadors in the region staying pro-active, new Ambassadors will be the same way, if they are more active the new ones will be also more active.

There was a lot of more things discussed and moved with the right ideas, its hard to get them out of the brain during the writing of this post, but everything was pushed to #fedora-fad and the meetbot was running, so there is a complete logfile (day 1 and day 2) and an etherpad to, which is more a summary.

All in all it was an very successful event and I looking forward to the next one, which will be during the adoption to budget.next in 7 months and the place might be Jakarta.

BarCamp Phnom Penh 2015

Oktober 26th, 2015 von buergermeister

Last weekend on 24th and 25th October as it again, the Barcamp in Phnom Penh and I participated this year. The barcamp was as all the years before hosted at the Institute for Technology Cambodia (ITC) and there as a big crowd as I arrived waiting for registration. I found our booth really fast and Leap Sok had already prepared the rollup banner and he also brought the swag which he stored after the Software Freedom Day. I thought we will have enough swag as I brought something from Europe and Harish send also what he had left to Cambodia. But all the swag was gone after 3 hours, it as really hard work handing DVD out and answer all the questions. What is it?, is it really for free?, can I take one? And opposite to Europe and North America, I had a lot of requests for a 32bit version. Besides all the questions I had to answer I gave interviews and met new and old friends. On Sunday I gave the opening talk in the FOSS panel, which was the first time that Barcamp had it. So all in all an sucessul event which ended with a very nice party.

Next year, there should be FUDCon at this event, so some more people from Fedora will be there, helping Fedoras community in Cambodia growing. But its still a year time for that and a lot of other activities will be before it. Next one next weekend, Translation Sprint.

Software Freedom Day 2015 Phnom Penh

September 21st, 2015 von buergermeister

Saturday the 19. September was Software Freedom Day, an worldwide organized day full with events on various places. I participated in the event in Phnom Penh, which was hold at the National Institute of Posts, Telecommunications and ICT (NIPTICT). It was the second time this event was hold in Phnom Penh and at this place and it begins to grow. There was around 100 participants. The event started in the afternoon and was just a single track with various talks. Fedora was presented by Leap Sok who hold an talk “Understanding Software Virtualization” and me with “Fedora.next And Beyond – Fedora For Everybody”. We also distributed arround 100 DVD to the audience, we met also some people who already use Fedora on their computer.
But the best thing that day is, that there was a good outcome for the future of the PPlug, where some changes will come to give this group new life. And also that Open Institute will help us with the Fedora Translation Sprint end of October. So all in all, it was a very nice event.

More you can read in Pockey’s blog, she has also written already an post about the SFD in Phnom Penh.

Flock is coming

Juli 25th, 2015 von buergermeister

Its just a few weeks to 3rd Flock, where the Fedora birds come together. The schedule is out for a while and as you can see I have two things which I will “present”.

The first one is Design Clinic, where you can come if you need help from the Design Team, Máirín Duffy, Ryan Lerch, Marie Nordin, Meghan Richardson and me will be there to helping you with problems you have. You can come with everything, you need a poster for an event so com, you need a logo so come, you need help with UX design so come, you have any idea where we can improve from the design perspective come and speak with us.

So far we have 3 projects we want already to work on:

  • Ralph Bean asked us a while ago if we can improve the “fedmenu”, some might have noticed it already that are the little buttons down in the corner if you are logged in into a page of Fedoras infrastructure.
  • Pierre-Yves Chibon, drives since a long time an service called “This week in Fedora” and he wants an design to present it better in the web.
  • Matt Miller wants help with an presence for “Two Week Atomic”

So if you have something just come along and grab us for help! You can also write to the design team mailing list, if you are not at Flock and have a thing where we should work on.

The second thing I have is the “Wallpaper Hunt“. As you might know I am responsible for getting the supplemental wallpapers for each Fedora release. Btw. our nice little application for doing that was started on first Flock but looking back to that Flock, I received after it some submissions from Charleston, that was definitely not good and there was so nice motives in Charleston to sad we had not one wallpaper in the next release which was shot during Flock. And there was so nice motives! This Flock I want to change that. With Marie Nordin I located a nice spot where we want to go and try to shoot pictures that can show up in Fedoras next version.

So I know we have talented photographer between us, lets get together going there and try get some nice pictures on this way we can share our knowledge and equipment and I think we will have some fun to. The only chance we have to do it, is Wednesday after the talks, so come to me before I will tell you where we meet.

On Saturday as you can see in the schedule we have some time then get the pictures processed.

FOSSOGRAPHY 2015

Juli 7th, 2015 von buergermeister

I will do in November a new event about Free Software graphic tools – FOSSOGRAPHY. This event plans to bring developer and user of this software together. Its thought of a kind of showcase about the newest developments in this areas and what can be done with free software. The projects shall win this way new users as even more contributors.
But it shall be also a place where the various programmers of the different projects can meet and connect to work on stuff where the programs should be working together. But also a place where you can come and tell people about an idea you have that might get software in this area improved.

The Call for Papers as well the registration for the event is open now and closes on 30th September. We search for talks, handout sessions, workshops, hackfest from the following areas:

  • Open Source and photographics
  • Free Software tools for image manipulation and raw development
  • 3D graphics and renderer
  • Free Software for vector graphics
  • Font design with Open Source
  • Free Software tools for 2D & 3D animation
  • Video editing and production with Open Source
  • Game development and asset creation with Open Source
  • UX design in/for and with Open Source
  • Desktop publishing and print design with FreeSoftware
  • Open Source 3D printing soft- and hardware
  • Open Source Color Management
  • Aerial photography and video with Open Source
  • DIY (open source) dolly systems
  • File formats for free graphic software

The idea to this evnet, was born a long time ago as another event who looks wants the same doesnt become what it should be.
After the decision was made to do it was open the place where it should be and there was a lot of thinking if it is a good idea to go first time to Asia. Yeah there are some disadvantages, like working style of Asians or the most Europeans/Americans think flying there would be more expensive as travelling inside Europe or the the amount of FOSS contributors isnt that high on this continent. But at a certain point we as free software movement have to go to Asia to get them involved and not always saying, we dont have contributors there!

But there is something else, we have to carry the costs for the event, where is actually a positive thing doing it in Asia as that gets amazingly cheap as well we want to support speakers and projects with there travel costs. We try to collect most of this money from the community, so if you believe in the goal of the event and/or using this tools, you can help us. We made a pledgie for that purpose and an indiegogo campaign will follow. But watch we want to give you something in return!

FUDCon APAC 2015 – Summary

Juli 1st, 2015 von buergermeister

I was last week in Pune for FUDCon, so its time to write about the experiences.

Day -2

I had to start my travel 2 days before the event from airport Leipzig flying to Munich, well the travel to Leipzig and also the checkin and flight was without something to mention. Just one hour ride to Leipzig and 40 minutes flight to Munich. I had a long layover in Munich so I checked before the situation with WIFI and electricity, well Munich has free wifi and they even proudly anounced that the equipped the gate areas with power supply, well they was there but simple not working. With a little searching I found one which was working but there was nothing to sit there so I spent the time in EMEA Ambassadors meeting standing :D

Day -1

Also for that day there was no action, boarding the plane in the morning and leaving it in Mumbai in the night. The immigration process with the TVOA visa worked well, except to find the counter for them was difficult. So if you travel to India and eligible to get it, thats the easiest way.
Outside the airport Prima Yogi Loviniltra and a volunteer did already wait for me, just Ryan Lerch was missing but he joined as a few minutes later. So the fetch on the airport was well organized. The cab ride took some time but interesting conversations made that not feelable. So we arrived in the morning in Pune just enough for 3 hours sleep.

Day 0

I had not really time for a good breakfast but I needed one as I had not a dinner either, but Kushal was already standing there telling me I was to late. But I managed to grab something to eat even the waiter always removed my tools when I grabbed something. Also here the transport was well organized and the bus for bringing us to MIT was already waiting.
On the first day I joined a few sessions but I will write only something about the most important for me. We had a BoF session for the next APAC FUDCon. What I am worried about is the style which is coming up there, just finding some point why a thing not might be good instead of trying to find out how problems can be solved!

Day 1

I started the day with Jiri Eischmanns presentation about the Fedora workstation and his presence and future. I joined several other talks to, where I just want to mention the Achieving Community Goals With Fedora one from Tenzin Chokden, awesome job of Joerg Simon and Fabian Affolter and their l10n hackfest for the tibetian language, good work. Besides that I had many organizational conversations for organzing stuff in the APAC region.

Day 2

This was actually the most busy day for me as I had in the morning my own workshop about using Inkscape. Well there are some negative things, the room was not the best choice, its hard to work on a small table attached to the chair. But more worst was that the picture from projector was looped to an camera, but the camera was missing so we had to find that out first, so I lost some time for the workshop. But we still managed to draw with the participants what I wanted to achieve and they have a good foundation to use Inkscape in their work and learn it more. I already prepared a screencast, which you can find here.

Ryan switched more to a presentation style, which I only do on events to impress people what with our free software tools can be done and how easy it can be. But as I expect people on a FOSS event like FUDCon are already open to using our tools and just need some help starting to work with them and the best way to learn it is by doing.

After the lunch we had another Ambassadors BoF for APAC, time to speak more Ambassador stuff. We made during this year some progress in APAC and on FUDCon it was visible a lot of asians in a Fedora Ambassador shirts, but we still have not all equipped with them.

We also made progress in producing F21 media centralized but still there are some problems to solve as the process didnt work well, we had no central production in APAC for F22 but we talked how we shall do it in the future and think found the best solution for it. We also had time to discuss if it would possible to replace the DVD media at least partly with USB sticks. We agreed on doing a research on prices until next FAD APAC end of the year and look there if we do it or not. And yes we found an place where we want to do the next FAD – Singapore so we will work on it during the next months to organize it. So we moved again forward.

Day 3

Some went out really in the morning to spent some time in Mumbai, but I am to old for touristic pressure even I would like to have seen more from that city, I was in India for FUDCon and not for an touristic tour. So I went out of the hotel at noon and the cab brought me to the airport, where I enjoyed the sun outside and later I spent some time with Danishka Naven and Izhar Firdaus in the airport.

Day 4

This day I entered a plane in Mumbai short after the day had begun and woke up landing in Zurich. Well I found easily an AC port in this airport and free wifi was also available so I could do some work during the time I had to wait for the next flight, wich was this time just 5 hours later. After this flight I just had a short trip with the train and I arrived right in time for the Design Team meeting.

Summary

It was an interesting trip to India seeing how people live there and make new friends, meeting people I worked already with and meeting old friends. I think we moved for the Ambassadors in the APAC region and that means Fedora makes progress in the future in Asia.

15th Anniversary Linuxwochen Vienna

Mai 11th, 2015 von buergermeister

As all the last year in May the event row called Linuxwochen makes it stop in Vienna and I represented Fedora there. This year it was an special event as the Linuxwochen could celebrate their 15th anniversary. And this years event was indeed special, normally this event is compared to others a smaller one as it is from Thursday to Saturday. But this year it was on Thursday already crowded and it looked some more Germans have found their way to Vienna. Also both of the workshop I gave in Vienna was an success and as always filled with people.
Personally I think the exhibition area was this year a nice one to, as Axiom Apertus Beta was presented there, first that this open source camera was presented in public and also Mozilla did show an TV running Firefox (an TV that you can buy, greetings to Ubuntu).
The social event was this year also a nice one, with an special delicious cake. So it was all in all a win to been there personally as for Fedora.

Chemnitzer Linux-Tage 2015

März 24th, 2015 von buergermeister

Last weekend there was Chemnitzer Linux-Tage, after the dead of LinuxTag in Berlin, Germany’s largest event around Linux and Open Source. I got to this event since the begin and it was like always a lot of visitors, even it was a little bit lsser this year as the years before. I had this year als only one talk, together with Robert Scheck.

So I had more time for conversations and the booth, which was as always good vistited. We did as the last 3 years also present an 3D printer but we was not the only ones, s time for a new idea. But the people have still interest in it. So we had a lot of conversations an handed out a lot of DVD and stickers.

P.S. if another Fedora Ambassador needs the slides, they can be found here

FAD APAC 2014

November 19th, 2014 von buergermeister

FAD APAC 2014, the first of its kind eneded already 3 days ago and I was not enabled to write an report until yet, as I am still in Phnom Penh and have each day a workload to do, with giving workshops, talks and meetings. But now its the time, Siddesh has already pushed out for each day ( day 0, 1 and 2) a nice summary, what things we have done. But here a short summary:

Day 1: this day, we started with me giving an overview as an outsider what I see are the problems of the APAC regions and then everybody had the opportunity to give us an inside view to his country. The rest of the day we spent with planning the budget for next year. I putted together with the help of other people an “asian event” page in our wiki, which we used to plan the budget. It was really a lot of work and the day ended really late, we stood in the DAI offices until past 7pm. So we was really late for dinner, which was definitely nice – to sad for me, to much fish and seafood.

Day 2: We used this day to finish the work on the event planning and then moved over to more problematic topics like production of swag. Thats a little bit more complicated here as I am used to in EMEA, but there is room for improvements, so we talked about the really needed swag, which should be easily accessible for the Ambassadors in the APAC region and how to produce it with good and acceptable prices, we also had to talk about how we deal with the reimbursements for some Ambassadors as transaction fees are to high, I think Siddesh explained it very well in one of his posts, the money value is here in a lot of countries another one, take Cambodia e.g. We came up with some ideas where we can improve but mainly they have to improve there organization how to deal with the costs.

I think this FAD was definitely progress for the APAC Ambassadors and we will see what it brings in the future. But we suceeded not only with the topics of FAD, we had also another thing. As I was here in February/March and gave some talks and awarded gifts for questions the session chair wanted to award some things to people who was Fedora Ambassadors. Why the was not visible as such ones, no Fedora shirt! There was several attempts to produce the same Fedora Ambassadors Shirts as we have in EMEA but it never progressed, but now its done. All the participants took home the shirts for the Ambassadors in their countries, with the list we have we already equipped 40% of the Ambassadors we have with an shirt. For the rest, well if we would know there size……. But look for the anouncement in the next APAC meeting.

We really have to say a BIG thank you for this really great support from Greta Greathouse from Development Innovations Cambodia, for hosting us, we enjoyed really being your guests.

Big Week Cambodia

November 2nd, 2014 von buergermeister

This November will be a busy month for me, I will fly to Cambodia again and bring some Fedora energy there. Its my second visit to this country and I look forward to it. I will have an talk at Royal University of Phnom Penh. RUPP is using Fedora for teaching there students basic skills for Linux. But as always, its teached more about technical stuff as what Linux or Fedora really is, projects driven by volunteers. RUPP gives me the great opportunity to speak to all there IT students about how they can contribute to Fedora and learn even more by doing so. But I will do some other things more.

  • On 14th of November I will join the Fedora Release Party Phnom Penh and help Somvannda Kong and Nisa Ban by giving an talk at this event. Truong Anh Tuan is giving another one. So it looks there will be an interesting program with talks and fun. Yes, Fedora 21 will not be released that day, but Beta will be available at least and we can show the features of the upcoming version.
  • On 15th of November I will help in the morning Somvannda in preparing the packaging workshop, which will be done that day remotely by Robert Scheck. So we will help the attendees to install all the necessary software for the workshop so that Robert can start without being enforced to take care of that.
  • The rest of November 15th and 16th I will join the FAD APAC, where the activities for the next year will be planned.
  • 17th and 18th of November I will deliver a 3 days workshop at Smallworld Cambodia, about doing Graphics with Free Software tools.
  • 20th of November I will be back at Development Innovations for delivering an Inkscape workshop to attendees from several NGO’s
  • 21st of November I doing an Open Movie Night at the same place, talking about free software and free culture and of course showing some examples what can be done with free software.
  • 22nd and 23rd of November I will do another Join Fedora workshop, as I did in February at Open Institute Phnom Penh. I hope that during all my presentations at RUPP, Release Party and so on, get enough people interested to start working for Fedora. In the workshop we will do all the  things together that are necessary to become a Fedora contributor.

Besides that activities I will have some meetings with friends and partners to organize some stuff in the future.

Retrospective Flock / day -1 & day 0

August 14th, 2014 von buergermeister

Flock ended some days ago and its time to write an post about it.

Day -1:

An event starts always mostly an day before it, with the travel. This time it was nearly a home game for me, just 3 hrs train ride. I was quite a time before my train would start on the station. I took one earlier as planned, because this one had already an delay of 15 minutes what means the train after would be also delayed and I had right. So I arrived as planned in Dresden and had only a few minutes before the train to Prague would arrive, but this one is always delayed. With the train arrived also Christoph Wickert and Luc de Louw and we continued together. After arrival, I exchanged fast some money and took the metro to the hostel. I managed to go together with Sarup,Jiri and Jaroslav to an pub for something to eat and of course a beer, later Christoph joined us. Couldnt sleep that well this night as my room mate was still missing and there was only one key for the room.

Day 0:

The first day of Flock was the day with the most topics I was interested in, I even had to decide. I started of course with the keynote, well the topic was covered so many times before. After getting the badge and other stuff I went to “Better Presentation of Fonts in Fedora“, I definitely agree with Praveen that there something can be done better but on some things I do not agree.

I am definitely one of the users who have a lot of fonts installed. Mostly I get from somebody an SVG with an font used in it which I dont have and then I look if it is packaged, mostly it is as the file comes in 80% from a Fedora user. So I do not care how it looks, I just want to see the design in the same way as the one who gave it to me.
Second use case is I want to design something and search for fonts that could be used. There definitely an packaged font makes no sense as I do not see it before I have it installed. There are two other options, I start “fonts” which shows me the installed ones, even with an example or I search online for a new font. Now Pravin suggests we build our own online service for fonts, should we do that? How would be using OFL instead as its already there publishing free licensed fonts, I am sure they would accept when we ask them for RPM packages so that an package can be removed as easy as it was installed. We dont have to build our own service for that.
But there are other problems around fonts that should be addressed, one of the problems I have fonts installed which are CC-NC licensed. Its always hard time for me, to find it out. Yes fonts shows me the meta data if I select an font. Would be much more easier, if I could say “show me fonts with free license that I can use for commercial things”. So this things have to be discussed more, not talking about that I very often search for an font which has the right glyphs ;)

Next talk on my plan was Chris Roberts and the Fedora Magazine, that is just amazing what did happen with this part of Fedora during the last year and how engaged Chris in it.
Next interesting thing was Sarup Banskota “The curious case of a Fedora Freshman“. During that talk an interesting discussion happend to sad we didnt grab an empty slot later the week to continue on it. It was how we can be better in getting new contributors. To sad we had to stop the discussion.
After this talk I heard Jiri Eischmann’s talk About the Ambassador Status and then I move to Chris Roberts and Marie Nordins talk about Badges & Badges Design.

and then PARRRTY

Flock -1

August 5th, 2014 von buergermeister

As always an event starts with the trip, this year for me a very short one. Just an 3hrs train ride on a route I have travelled many times before. But its still enjoyable as the train goes until Prague along the Elbe river, means you cross the whole Saxonian Switzerland one of Europes most beautiful landscapes. And what is the best, can enjoy the trip again with fellow Fedorians. In german, we would say “ich mach dann mal die Flocke” ;)

Augsburger Linux-Info-Tag 2014

April 8th, 2014 von buergermeister

On 22. March there was again Augsburger Linux-Infotag, an event I normally not visit. He is to small and the travel to it is to complicated for me. But this year I did go there to represent Fedora with an booth, I was not alone Björn Esser was the event owner and Raphael Groner did also help on the booth.
As I said the event is a small one with just a few hundred visitors but this year there was at the same day open house of the university so there was more people. We brought only a few DVD and swag and the DVD was gone soon. We reached through the open house event people who not using Linux and free software and became interested.

Chemnitzer Linux-Tage 2014

April 7th, 2014 von buergermeister

It’s time for another event report. The weekend from 15. and 16 March there was CLT in Chemnitz and I was there. It was now the 15th CLT and it was like all the years before but from my point of view there was lesser visitors as in the year before. But there was a long queue in the morning, people waiting for entry.

I had on saturday in the morning an workshop about using darktable and it was a mess. First I was totally jetlagged and my brain was somewhere else but not in my body where it belongs and the technical problems I had to face brought me really out of my concept. Window geometry of darktable didnt switch to the screen resolution that is no fun and the projector showed very different colors.

Everything else, was the same like all the years before, same people so not much to write about it.

Last day in Cambodia

März 10th, 2014 von buergermeister

Today is my last day in Cambodia and a exhausting but also cool time will end. The first days I was at FOSSASIA as I wrote in my blog before (day 1, 2, 3 ), Tuan and Uditha did also write about the event. For Fedora it was a very successful event, we was enabled to find 6 new contributors, for Ambassadors and translation. After the event we went together with the night bus to Siem Reap, for an very short visit to Angkor, you cannot been in Cambodia without seeing it. After it I came back to Phnom Penh, where I had 2 workshops about using Inkscape. One at Smallworld Cambodia and one at WebEssentials.asia. I found a lot of new friends and one the one side I would like to stay longer as there is still need for more such things here. But on the other side, I am happy to go home and be the next weekend at my favorite event Chemnitzer Linux-Tage.
