An Awesome Week

April 16th, 2019 von buergermeister

Last week was one of the most awesome weeks, I ever had. Even the start was not so successful, I tried to get my bicycle repaired. Unfortunately as I came to the bike store in my area they was bringing out the furniture as it got closed. But on friday I got it repaired what was quiet an adventure and took the whole afternoon. I had to visit 5 shops to find the right size, but the ugly thing came later finding somebody who fixes the tire on the wheel. Normally you find here each ten meters somebody who fixes tires but nobody wanted to do it. 1.5 hours searching to find one, but now I can use my bicycle again, what saves me a lot of time and money.
The best day was by far the wednesday, first I got confirmed that Open Development Cambodia will host the next Translation Sprint and even more they would host us month for month. After a short consultation with the most active translators, we will do starting May bi-monthly Translation Sprints. I had 3 weeks ago a meeting at Open Development Cambodia and they just wanted me to note down what Fedora is and what we doing, just for their sponsors. The meeting took me the whole day, not the meeting itself but getting there was one hour for me without bike and of course one hour back. But now after 6 months searching and dozens of unsuccessful meetings I finished it and the next sprint can happen. I already made all the necessary tickets and after Khmer New Year we will announce it.

But the best what did happen, that my Moneypool for a new laptop got filled in not even 12 hours after I did blog about it. That really makes me happy, but since then I am not sure if I shall leave it open or close it. In case one I could try to get a better used one or even a new one, if some more donations get in. I did look what I could get, Thinkpads of the T-serie are over 1000US$ but some Edge seems to be in reachable distance. I would go for one even I had bad experiences with an Edge before. So far I decided to leave it open as I cant buy one right now during the New Year holidays anyway and to my birthday are 14 days left. So if you want to donate, you can do, you even can leave me a comment as I am not sure about it.

After I found a place for the next Translation Sprint and even for the following ones, I have now more time and energy again to work on the next “Different Release Party” together with PNC. I hope this works out.

A new laptop is needed

April 9th, 2019 von buergermeister

In December the worst case did happen to me as I already did tell here, my laptop died during an event. Was really hard for me to deliver my talks and workshops at this event without one (luckily I had the slides already on my fp.o) Well he is back to life, but not really. He holds no power anymore and when I transport him I need several attempts to start him, he doesnt show then no BIOS so I need 5-10 attempts to start him. That he has no working battery anymore really hurts right now a lot, we have an drought wave here and the government switches the electricity off each day for 6 hours as they cant pay it. As I do not know when it comes, usually they change between starting morning and starting at lunch time, but on different times so I often loose what I am working on :( They plan to keep this power disconnections on until the end of the dry season in June.
I need a new working device, laptops are in Cambodia very expensive (even you have China around the corner) you get nothing really useful under 500$. I am aiming for a T440 which was availale for 530$. Why then 600EUR? Its simple Paypal wants always a small amount in fees already and at a certain point I have to make it to cash, means transferring it to my bank account which is in EUR and the conversion rates of Paypal are an impudence they have an around difference to the rate of 5 cents (means you get for each 100$ 5EUR less) thats why I collecting in EUR instead US$. So I get transferred it without furthermore loss and have to pay then only the fees the banks here want.

I thought that I can earn over the time a new one but that seems not the case, the electricity situation right now is a large setback and I already feel it in the pocket that I have lesser time to earn. The deficit is much higher as the “saved” costs for electricity, I have just a 2$ smaller electricity bill last month. Besides this there seems to be a conspiracy against me, my fan died to, also my phone just gave up to serve me and my bike needs a new tire after getting a nail into it, two weeks ago. So I never have a chance to save something. But I would like to continue with all my work but it becomes more and more harder, especially without an working laptop.

I did setup a while ago a moneypool on Paypal for collecting for my birthday gift. So maybe you can/want help me to finance my next working device. In case you want to use something else as Paypal contact me, I am sure we can work something out.

Fedora 30 – Supplemental Wallpaper

Februar 5th, 2019 von buergermeister

The submission phase for the Fedora 30 Supplemental Wallpapers ended a few days ago, now the voting is open and is until 25th. You have 16 choices you can make and are allowed to vote when you have CLA + 1 membership. This time we have not to many choices, just a bit above 50.  Here are my 3 favorites:

The voting process happens inside Nuancier so you can go now and vote, dont forget to claim the badge, its not given by hand.

How Fedora’s Wallpaper Are Made

Dezember 7th, 2018 von buergermeister

I am now member of the Design Team more then 10 years and had my hands in, in many off the fedora wallpaper. Over the years the Design Team developed a way to be creative and come up with a unique design for each release. This way was build around the release names, yes it became harder, how funnier the release names became. For Fedora 20 aka Heisenbug, there was no idea how this name could be represented. So this wallpaper was build with the number of the release 20 and his latin representation XX. Then the council disabled the code names, what put the Design Team into a little crisis, we tried to work furthermore with the numbers but except for Fedora 24 (which represents 24 hours of a day) not work. So a solution was needed.
Since Fedora 25 I running a small voting among the Design Team, giving a few names of inventors/discoverer. This is not the same as code names, as we use it only as an creative starting point. Nevertheless there are always people outside the team taking the vote (and they vote mostly just because they find the name cool and have no eye what can be done with)

Archimedes

Archimedes, Al-Battani and Armstrong been the choices for this version, and Archimedes won very clear. And so the wallpaper bases on a design of an archimedian spiral, maybe you can see it now.

Alexander Graham Bell

For Fedora 26 Charles Babagge, George Beauchamp and Alexander Graham Bell as inventor of the telephone been the choices and Bell won the voting. But how do you come from telephone to a line of trees? Take a closer look, the line of trees is nothing else as a waveform of a spoken word, here Fedora. Isnt that genius?

Jaques Cousteau

Jaques Cousteau came out as the favorite for Fedora 27, the other choices been Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot and Vladimir Nikolayevich Chelomey. And so the beautiful jellyfish design was created.

Emily C. Duncan

For Fedora 28, Mo requested the change one of the person shall be a woman (thats a bit problematic as there are lesser woman inventors outside. Since then we have 4 options to choose from. Giovanni de Dondi, Arvid Gerhard Damm, Georges Darrieus and Emily C. Duncan. Emily C. Duncan did win, the concept of the artwork bases of “information travelling down/up wires”.

Gertrude B. Elion

As I was not available for wrangling the Fedora 29 inspiration, Mo suggusted relative late to go with Gertrude B. Elion and so the wallpaper was made on a concept of hexagons representing cells.

Augustin-Jean Fresnel

For the upcoming Fedora version 30, we held the voting and there been Federico Faggin, Rosalind Franklin, Sandford Fleming and Augustin-Jean Fresnel the options. The team decided to go with Fresnel, so you can be curious with what we come up.

Some closing words, as I said before there are always people who read the mail on the list and vote, even they are not member of the team. That would be fine, but there is one thing, they always vote because they find the invention cool or the name but this doesnt help the Design Team. This is a two-sided thing I have spoken about this a while ago with Mo, the people have interest to “contribute” into such a voting but as said, its not helpful in this way for the team itself. I have an idea how to solve this problem, maybe there is room to hack the needed thing together during next GSoC.

Science Glyphs

Juni 15th, 2018 von buergermeister

Its a while ago since the last update here. What not means I dont do anything. Some months ago Martin Owens aka doctormo (from the Inkscape team) came to me and asked me if I could help to rework and extend a project he started, called science icons.https://gitlab.com/doctormo/glyphicons-science

I started working on it a while ago. First I added the missing glyphs for microscope, atom, robot, telescope, satrun, radioactive and replaced the rocket one. Now I added also antenna (radio astronomy), galaxy, orbit, asteroid and observatory.

On the end a font set with glyph icons for science shall be developed from it, a font set like fontawesome which you can use in apps around science projects. I think there is a lot in it.

Lets see what I can do next. Next to the drawing and tiring node cleaning (what has to be done for glyphs) there is also a bit of organizational work behind.

  • Update on Supplemental Wallpaper for Fedora 28

    Februar 11th, 2018 von buergermeister

I used the weekend to moderate the supplemental wallpapers for Fedora 28. I did already check from time to time the sumissions and rejected the ones who break the guidelines, and started checking the legality of the ones with given references of the license.
So far we have 124 submissions, but I rejected a lot (so far 18) this time for wrong aspect ration, some never will get that we dont accept submissions with the Fedora logo on it and unclear licenses, this time I rejected all who was not licensed with the same license as on Flickr or any other given reference. Before I always informed the submitter about this inconsistency, but there is to many of them now and it is very time consuming (some really think its just hitting a button inside Nuancier, I can assure you its not). 61 badges are so far awarded
There might come some more submission as there is some time until 13th left. But dont think I can moderate you last minute submission, Pingou already added now finally the feature that we can have deadline for submission and the begin of the voting phase on different dates.

some of my personal favorites so far:

The contest is a time and resourcen devouring thing for me, I spend an average of 160-200 hours working time with it. I have to mention this also now, I have to live with just a mobile connection and this costs me serious traffic. I had to add volume on Sunday just to finishing it and that after spending already on saturday a lot of traffic for it. Ok mobile traffic is in Cambodia (for western view) very cheap, to add 500MB costs me just 0.30$ but there is a downside, if you topup here the money is only valid for usage during next 7 days, so using 30 cents from a dollar means, 70 cents stay and normally I just have 1$ a week costs for my subscription, so this money will be not used and on the end I paid 1$ for the add, except I use it for adding more. Currently a dollar, is a lot for me I also get a good meal for it but unfortunately a coffee (at least not a good one)

Inkscape Workshop for the Young Eco Ambassadors

    September 28th, 2017 von buergermeister

After a long time it is time for another Inkscape Workshop here in Phnom Penh. This time the audience are young “ecopreneurs”. The environmental situation in Cambodia isnt the best, especially the situation with the trash. It is really a problem, if you drive trough the city, you seeing that Khmer always have a coffee or sugar can juice on their motobike hanging, that is a ot of plastic which ends up directly on the street. The effect of that is it flowing around when the rain comes, the channels are full of them it stinks and it always ends in the chain if you drive with the bicycle during the rain. So not nice!
This young people, want to change that. They do events educating people, what they can do better and founding businesses with an higher ecological impact and sometimes they just going on the street and collect the trash by them self. So a good thing to do.
This workshop shall help them to reach more people. We will do it for two days, the first day will be an introduction to Inkscape, with an practical part where we draw an trash bin. The second day will an introduction to poster design, where we work out the principles for it and design with Inkscape a few posters.

Sneak Peak into F26 Supplemental Wallpaper

    März 20th, 2017 von buergermeister

There are just few days left, then the submission period for the Fedora 26 Supplemental Wallpaper ends and the voting will be open. Time for looking a bit behind the scenes. So far we had 94 submissions, that is again the average we had over the last contests.
The quality is also again average, compared to the time we started Nuancier its much lower. I have a strong feeling we have a lot of people just submitting something to get the badge. We have to get to a stage with an higher quality again and I started this time also to reject for quality reasons, from the 94 submissions stay after 83, so 11 rejections. I think thats record, but its not for quality reasons most I had to reject for copyright violations. Its a bit hard for me that some Ambassadors have no idea about licensing, and that they are not the author/creator of a picture even the real creator has licensed it CC0. So this time all this things was direct rejected, no second chance and I think I will keep it that way. Why sould I invest more work as necessary especially it doesnt get honored and I get insulted later on for it.
It cost me an average of 6 minutes just to moderate a submission and award the badge, not to mention that I have to do a legal research for them which costs an average of 2 hours a submission. Not to mention that there is also time needed for the creation of the election, for the article in Fedora Magazine which anounces the start of the contest, the article in the Community Blog which reminds you to go for the vote and and and…. Its more as a full month work just for that.

So for the next election there will be some changes more according to the submitters who submit work of others. I definitely will deny submissions from other wallpaper services/pages. Some other things will follow but require some technical changes in Nuancier, back to quality back to honor the people who create things for Fedora and work for doing it. Not the ones who search for 10 minutes in the internet for a free licensed picture and submit it but later on are the loudest ones, that they have submitted.

Thats all for now and now my usual 5 favorites amongst the submissions

    Sneak into…

    September 16th, 2016 von buergermeister

the current stage of the Fedora 25 Supplemental Wallpaper.. Start of this month I openend the submission phase for the Fedora Supplemental Wallpaper. So far we have received 91 submissions and currently 72 of them are approved. So far 49 contributors earned a badge for their submission. But there is still time until 11. October left to contribute a wallpaper.

So far that are my favorites:

    Design Team FAD

    August 4th, 2016 von buergermeister

Durng the weekend of 28th to 31st of July I was in Westford for the Design Team FAD, which we had now for the second time and we use mainly for organizing the work in the team. We all arrived during the week, but we are much lesser then last year, as some flights are more expensive like mine. So we are just 7 people this year.

Day one we spending most of the time with preparing for the open badges hackfest which we will held tomorrow. So we prepared some Inkscape lessons for an entry to Inkscape. The rest of the day we was spending time for organizational stuff we have to do for the work with the Design Team. We organized during the FAD 2015 the work of the Design Team new, we have since then regular meetings in IRC where we look over our ticket queue. Since we doing that, we handle all tickets very fast and our ticket queue is always in short time solved. But that creates another problem, we never have tickets for newcomers left, so we have to find a solution for that. The other problem we have with that is, that we concentrating to much on the tickets and the design for the distribution itself does not end up there, so we sometimes loosing track of it. With the meeting we have to find a solution for it as a bigger part of the Design team is now living in APAC, like Ryan Lerch and me. So its very difficult for us joining the regular meeting. We also spent time organizing the migration of our ticket system to Pagure, which will be happen soon. The migration from trac to Pagure is for the Design Team and the Badges a little bit more problematic as we need some features to do so.

Next to this organizational things we had on saturday an open house workshop, about using Inkscape and doing badges with it. Mo has an more detailed report about that part of the FAD

Looking for Records, Looking for Contributions

    April 17th, 2016 von buergermeister

A few days ago, the voting for the Supplemental Wallpaper for Fedora 24 opened. And I am impressed, how many Fedora contributors have voted so far, but I have to tell you that even I dont know the exact number yet. Nuancier is written in a way, that I cant look into the numbers before it is published. But Fedora Badges gives a little bit of an insight, but you have to see as we made that badge for the first time there was a lot of discussion about badges for voting, so it must be claimed manually and its not claimed by all who vote. But now we have already 207 badges for Fedora 24 claimed, compared to 89 for Fedora 23. So the amount of voters is already doubled and there is still nearly a week time for the votes!

Personally I am impressed and happy to see that lot of interest in this part of Fedora. For me is the Supplemental Wallpaper Contest a so called low hanging fruit, which make it very easy possible to contribute to Fedora.

The first step from consumer to contributor is by far the hardest and if this step is done, it becomes way easier to do more. I thinking since a long time to open the voting also to people who have not cla/fpca +1 membership. That would be from my perspective a necessary step, but I always have the fear for the quality. We reached a level of quality now, which is good but still our own contributors have a strong faible for blue, the rather would vote for an halfway acceptable blue wallpaper instead of an amazing shot of an bird.

We already installed a weight system for the voting, members of the Fedora Design Team have an higher weight with there vote and there is also the group of Nuancier Mentors, who have also more weight for their vote.

Originally the Nuancier Mentors was thought as a group who continuously contributed to the Supplemental Wallpaper Contest, to get them mostly out of the problem not to be allowed to vote by themselves. That´s a bit chicken-egg problem with this ¨low hanging fruit¨” you also can scare contributors them off with this.

The Nuancier Mentors group was also thought for giving them more responsibility and improve the quality of the submissions. But its not that far implemented as I would like, as Nuancier is simple a sideshow. There is still the feature for the multi-monitor wallpaper, which is not implemented yet but ready to do so. There are also some needed features, I had this time a bit of trouble to moderate the last submissions. There are four submissions this time, who could not been moderated as I have to do for all a legal research (I had to reject this time 3 for violations, people are not aware they cant submit everything). So I need a small time between the end of submission phase and voting phase, thats right now not possible as it opens automatically and I also might need some time after the election.

    • But there are other things, who could be helpful improving the Contest. First of all we have way to many wallpaper packages, people always asking how to install them. The nicest thing to do would be to deliver them by default, replace the GNOME (and also on the other DEs) extra ones. That would be the nicest thing to do. That would make the wallpaper really prominent and might animate more to contribute in higher quality.
    • As the Nuancier Mentors group was thought for increasing the quality of the wallpaper through giving hints what could be improved with an submission that requires tiny changes in what can be submitted. Its lesser possible then to submit the work of somebody else (that would decrease the amount of legal research I have to do) as changes might require the source. But Nuancier has to be change to submit versions of a submission. And that requires some work. There is the problem with acceptance/moderation to solve then. But I think that kind of moderation can be done then by the mentors. So there is a way how to do it to find and it must be implemented.
    • Open the voting for everybody with an FAS account. I think that can be done for Fedora 25, to secure the quality, we could change the weight system a bit more, so that Fedora contributors have a higher value in vote to prevent fake-accounts and cheating votes. I really would like to open it, lets see if we can do for F25.

But all requires some work and I am sure Pingou would be happy to get some help in implementing new features for Nuancier. But its open anyway, you can find the source code here.

Current Score Supplemental Wallpaper Fedora 24

    März 25th, 2016 von buergermeister

Its more then a month ago, that I opened the Contest for finding the Supplemental Wallpaper for Fedora 24. Its time to give a little inside view and current score, what is going on.

What was new this time was the limitation of submission a single user can do, and so far it suffused what it was expected to do. The quality is significant higher. Also the rejects are this time, much lower, just 2 this time after we had for Fedora 23 a new record. But I have to say its again, that some would look really look better with a little bit of work on the picture. I really hope we can integrate the “mentoring process” soon into Nuancier. The mentors group already exists, and it would raise the quality of the wallpaper more. Here are my 5 favorites so far:

So far we have 99 submissions, and 97 are valid. 53 badges for contributions are handed out, but a lot of contributors have no badges account, and the most of them are fresh contributors. But there is still time for submissions, until 11th of April. So go make your contribution, if you not have done it yet!

    Document Freedom Day Phnom Penh

    März 24th, 2016 von buergermeister

As one of the points we had to revive the Phnom Penh Linux User Group again, was to really do activities on Software-, Hardware- and Document Freedom Day and coming to a regularly meeting, which we have now each first Tuesday in the month at the iCafe. As it is the time for Document Freedom Day (DFD) we will have at our next meeting of course, a topic that fits to it. I will be showing how easily it can be done to use Inkscape for presentation slides, to bring the people to use this instead of flash, pdf or more evil prezi.

The talk will happen 5th of April 2016, 8.00pm at the iCafe (next to Brother88, on 2nd floor) #196z Street 19

    Supplemental Wallpaper Winners!

    September 22nd, 2015 von buergermeister

We broke this time nearly all records since we doing the Supplemental Wallpaper Contest with Nuancier. We had 199 submissions, where actually 157 ended up in the pot for the elections. These came from 73 submitters, a lot of them new contributors. Unfortunately we also broke the record for rejected submissions. The most of them contained a trademarked logo, notice that includes our own also! One thing was also more negative, a lot of participants uploaded, not just 3 pictures as many more. Some of them submitted a lot and mostly iterations. That leads to a problem, the Fedora community shows a strong love for “blue”, means if somebody submitting just iterations of a blue pattern, he has a good chance. But it can be that all of his iterations are elected, instead of other better submissions with higher quality.

So, with the next contest, we have to limit to amount of submissions that can be made. Hopefully we can implement also some other features to.

But for now here are the winners:

Inkscape workshop for Linux statt Windows

    September 13th, 2015 von buergermeister

Internet is this nice technology, who makes it possible to give a workshop even without being at a place. So yesterday I gave a workshop from Cambodia in Germany. But I had interesting expiriences with in Mumble did not work well, even its lighter and has good latency handling but Google hangout did work, I think Google has some priority in the network here, what is strange. But all participants from https://linux-statt-windows.org had fun in the workshop and learned something on the end.

So next weekend next event this time Software Freedom Day where I will give an talk, here in Phnom Penh.

All the participants had a lot of fun and achieved the goal. Some of them was really talented. But the want more Inkscape workshops, well this time I have the time to do it :D

    September 5th, 2015 von buergermeister

The submission phase for the supplemental wallpaper for Fedora 23 isnt over yet. There are so far 169 submissions. But I had to reject this time already 40 because they used material of other pictures without quotation or an trademark was included. So we have 120 submissions in the pot right now. That are right now my favorites:

But there is still one week you can submit your wallpaper, so grab your camera and shoot some nice pictures ;)

    Flock is coming

    Juli 25th, 2015 von buergermeister

Its just a few weeks to 3rd Flock, where the Fedora birds come together. The schedule is out for a while and as you can see I have two things which I will “present”.

The first one is Design Clinic, where you can come if you need help from the Design Team, Máirín Duffy, Ryan Lerch, Marie Nordin, Meghan Richardson and me will be there to helping you with problems you have. You can come with everything, you need a poster for an event so com, you need a logo so come, you need help with UX design so come, you have any idea where we can improve from the design perspective come and speak with us.

So far we have 3 projects we want already to work on:

    • Ralph Bean asked us a while ago if we can improve the “fedmenu”, some might have noticed it already that are the little buttons down in the corner if you are logged in into a page of Fedoras infrastructure.
    • Pierre-Yves Chibon, drives since a long time an service called “This week in Fedora” and he wants an design to present it better in the web.
    • Matt Miller wants help with an presence for “Two Week Atomic”

So if you have something just come along and grab us for help! You can also write to the design team mailing list, if you are not at Flock and have a thing where we should work on.

The second thing I have is the “Wallpaper Hunt“. As you might know I am responsible for getting the supplemental wallpapers for each Fedora release. Btw. our nice little application for doing that was started on first Flock but looking back to that Flock, I received after it some submissions from Charleston, that was definitely not good and there was so nice motives in Charleston to sad we had not one wallpaper in the next release which was shot during Flock. And there was so nice motives! This Flock I want to change that. With Marie Nordin I located a nice spot where we want to go and try to shoot pictures that can show up in Fedoras next version.

So I know we have talented photographer between us, lets get together going there and try get some nice pictures on this way we can share our knowledge and equipment and I think we will have some fun to. The only chance we have to do it, is Wednesday after the talks, so come to me before I will tell you where we meet.

On Saturday as you can see in the schedule we have some time then get the pictures processed.
