Looking back

Dezember 31st, 2013 von buergermeister

It’s the time in the year where you look back what you have done in the past year. I did that some years before in my blog to, so what have I done this year. The first thing I notice for myself I visited this year not that much events as before. Past years I had mostly 13 a year or even 15, this year it was only 8. Second thing I noticed, the a lot of them are longer then only the weekend, 3 events was 4 days long and one 3 so I spent a whole working month on events. With the travel its the whole month then or better more as I spent 17 days directly with travelling for them.
I visited in March Chemnitzer Linux-Tage an event which is a home game, in April I was in Madrid for LibreGraphicsMeeting, In May there was in Vienna the Linuxwochen and in Berlin the LinuxTag, in August I was at the first Flock in Charleston and in Cologne for FrOSCon, in October I had an horrible trip to Heidelberg for german Ubucon and the last event I did was in Oberhausen the OpenRheinRuhr. At the events I had 6 talks and delivered also 8 workshops and at Flock an hackfest. What I did also this year is some open workshops on different cities about Inkscape, which take a whole weekend. In January I started with one in Essen in Linuxhotel, I had 2 in Berlin, one in Cologne and Hamburg and one at my home town. So on the end 5 weekends out of home again.
Besides that I found some time to work for Fedora I did some banners and shirts and such stuff and tangled the supplemental wallpapers again, this year 2 times. Of course I took part in the creation of the default wallpaper. I am very happy the my Flock hackfest did result in Nuancier, which we used in a early stage for the voting for F20 supplemental wallpapers. Pingou spent some time during Christmas on it, so hopefully for F21 we can use it also for the submission. So it was a (sometimes to) busy year for me.

OpenRheinRuhr 2014

November 24th, 2013 von buergermeister

Some days ago I was on OpenRheinRuhr, an event in which I participate since the begin. Last year there was unfortunately no OpenRheinRuhr as the place was taken by another exhibition. I manned together with Felix and Christian the Fedora booth and besides of that I had a talk and a workshop in the schedule.

My talk was about the status of open source animation programs, where in this year a lot of things happend. Hopefully the upwind that area has right now, tails not off to soon and will show effect. The workshop I had was this time not about Inkscape like always, it was about Blender, the time was really short so the workshop became more an demonstration. What actually turned out really nice. Both talk was workhop was well visited and a lot of questions and interesting conversations came up after them. Think I will do OpenRheinRuhr next year again.

Ubucon 2013

Last weekend I was at the german edition of Ubucon, it was not my first one. Of course it was recognizable that I am not from Ubuntu as I weared like before my Fedora Ambassador Shirt, but I was not the only one from outside of the Ubuntu world, there was also Martin Gräßlin the KWin developer, who comes from openSUSE. That we are not from the Ubuntu Community was recognized from Kristian Kißling editor of the German Linuxmagazin and so he mentioned us in his article about the event. I had some interesting conversations on the event, hopefully next year I will be not the only Fedora guy there. There is definitely place to show e.g. RPM packaging and the visitors of Ubucon are the open people of the Ubuntu community, they are willing to learn also about such things, the program was generally not very Ubuntu related more Linux and FLOSS related. So next year I think I will be again going to this event.

Supplemental Wallpaper – Go For The Vote!

Oktober 1st, 2013 von buergermeister

The submission time for the Supplemental Wallpaper for Fedora 20 is now over, now there comes even a more hard part select the right ones for the package. As for Fedora 19 everybody who is member of a group additionally to the cla-group can vote. But there is something new this time, you can vote in Nuancier. That makes it a lot easier to vote, as you can see what you are going vote for and not have to look into the wiki like before. You will see voting with Nuancier is fun!

Nuancier is actually a thing why I love to work on Fedora, it took from the idea on Flock to this first working stage only a month. So I have to thank the people who helped to realize this idea. In the future Nuancier will not only serve for the selection process for the package, it will also serve for the submission process. We hope to have it ready for Fedora 21. With this it will become much much easier to submit to the contest and for me it will make it also easier as some things can be tested automatically on the upload. But enough with looking into an glass ball.

You can vote for at least 16 wallpapers, but you have not for 16 just select your favorites. The period for the voting will not be long just until 4th of October 2013 23.59.59UTC. If you want, you can get a badge for the voting but you have to claim it. All submitters will get one and the selected submitters another one, so a lot of badges to award. So now go for the vote and help making Fedora 20 become beautiful!

F20 will become beautiful…

September 13th, 2013 von buergermeister

Half of the submission period for the Supplemental Wallpaper for Fedora 20 is over now. Time to make a kind of status report. First we got so far a lot of submissions this time, nearly 90 and there is still more then 2 weeks left for submissions. Might be a lot of people just wanted to have the badge for the submission. The bad thing is the quality isnt this time so high as for Fedora 19 but there are still nice submissions, so we will get a nice package. This are my personally top 10 right now.

Another thing is I never had before to disqualify that much of submissions. The reasons are wrong sizes, simple to small and also wrong licenses. All of the submitters get in that case a mail from me and you should respond to it otherwise I have no chance as to disqualify it. Still a lot of people have problems with submitting to the wiki, mostly because the wiki cant create thumbnails when the file size of the upload is to big. Dont hesitate and ask me for help!

But for this problem there will be a solution soon, as I wrote in a past post here there will be an application for submissions and the voting in the future. The part for the voting is in a good shape now and it looks we can/will use it already for this period, I really looking forward to this. But for now still time for some more beautiful submissions until 30th September 2013 23:59:59 UTC.

8th FrOSCon

September 3rd, 2013 von buergermeister

The weekend from 24 and 25th August there was again FrOSCon in St. Augustin near Cologne. It wa my 8th attendance to this conference but what shall I say this year was not the best, and not because of the rainy weather. The organization of FrOSCon is know as a little bit chaotic, but this year it was the top! For Fedora we had a booth as an DevRoom, the booth was like always nice visited, especially we had Miro and an 3D printer on it.
For the DevRoom we made a nice program, this year not in cooperation with Mageia and openSUSE as we had last year with an RPM concentric schedule. Problem was this year, the schedule was not printed in the program and hard to find on the webpages as you had to scroll down. So we had not a lot of visitors in our room, especially we had that one with the longest way. For the first talk it was like in my own DevRoom nobody showed up, but beginning with Miros talk we had visitors and the amount was not that bad for them. But if we do an room again we have to think about how to improve the marketing for it. But besides that, FrOSCon edition 2013 was worth to visit as all the others before, so see you next year there.

8th FrOSCon

August 22nd, 2013 von buergermeister

This weekend FrOSCon will take place in a small town near Bonn called St. Augustin and will be the 8th time. Of course Fedora will be present. We will have a booth featuring an 3D printer. But there will be more. If you are interested in 3D printing, step by on Sunday in Fedoras Room, Miro will show there how to code your models. So we will have an own DevRoom for Fedora this year again.

Besides the 3D printing workshop there will be other Fedora related talks:

  • The Cat Is Alive And Running Out Of The Box
  • Fedora 19 and 3D printing
  • OpenSCAD: Code you 3D models
  • A Look Into The Glass Ball - Features Of Upcoming Fedora 20
  • Free Your Slides - Use SVG and Inkscape For Presenting

I will have another DevRoom for an Inkscape Workshop on both days. You can find the program schedule here. So interested in Fedora just step by at the booth or/and DevRoom.

Submit Wallpaper for Fedora 20

August 21st, 2013 von buergermeister

We might have no name for Fedora 20 yet, so the Design Team could not start working on the design for it yet but what you can do contributing to a beautiful look for Fedora 20, is submit to the Supplemental Wallpapers. You might remember the for Fedora 19 choosen ones.

So how to contribute to the Supplemental Wallpapers for Fedora 20?

First there are some rules. Here are the technical specifications:

  • Submitted wallpapers must use a format that can be read by software available in Fedora Package Collection. Preferred image formats include SVG and PNG.
  • Master files, which may be further edited, should be maintained in non-lossy formats. Preserving vector graphics, raster layers, and channels is important for such materials.
  • Originals for landscape formats must be a minimum of 1600 pixels wide and 1200 pixels high. The larger the better. Photographic submissions should be made at the highest resolution the camera is capable of.
  • Submitted wallpapers should be provided in a 16 x 9 aspect ratio when possible.
  • No watermarks, signatures, photographer/creator names, or messages may be included in any part of the work. However if the license allows, and the photo is compelling enough, we could remove watermarks.

Now here are the organizational rules:

  • Submissions must not contain material that violates or infringes another’s rights, including but not limited to privacy, publicity or intellectual property rights, or that constitutes copyright infringement. If your submissions include or derive from artwork created by other people, please make sure the license of the original work you incorporate is compatible with Fedora and that you are not violating any of the provisions of its license. Just because a work is licensed with a Creative Commons license does not mean it is free to use (make sure you provide attribution to artists that license their work with a CC Attribution clause.)
  • Submission should have the consent and approval of the author or creator
  • Submissions re thereby licensed to the public for reuse under CC-BY-SA unless specifically identified as being licensed by another approved liberal open source license. See a list of approved licenses for Fedora. Note that we can not accept NC or ND submissions.

The deadline until you can submit your artwork is the September 30 2013 at 23:59 UTC. You can submit your material directly to the wiki: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F20_Artwork/Submissions/Supplemental_Wallpapers. For further questions, you can send me a mail and don’t hesitate to ask me for assistance just write me a mail gnokii@fedoraproject.org.

Retrospective Flock

August 19th, 2013 von buergermeister

First Flock is history now and I am back home now. Back on work as next event is end of this week and there are some other important things to do also. But is time to write a little report how Flock was. I am not a big friend of to write down I visited this talk or that one. Personally I submitted only a hackfest for the Supplemental Wallpaper. There wasnt a lot of people but the right one at this hackfest.
The problem we face right now or since the begin is, that the wiki isnt thought for collecting wallpapers and a lot of people have problems with it, as the wiki doesnt create thumbnails anymore when the filesize is to big (thats often the case) and the second problem is that we opened the voting to all Fedora contributors and our voting system isnt thought for such amount of voting possibilities.
So we discussed solutions and it turned out, a application would be the best solution for it and we came further as we have done the mockups for the application. Jennifer Kotler, who worked on Fedora Badges took that task and really finished it on Flock, as we agreed to come together on Monday in a session again, we had the mockups there and had time to discuss it with the Infrastructure Team and got some good points from them.

Now there are only to fix some small things and the application has to be coded and we can continue with the Supplemental Wallpapers in a more open way. I think it will not be ready for Fedora 20 at least not for the whole process, but hopefully for the voting. But with Fedora 21 we will have it. So just with that achievement Flock was an success, but there was more. I met a lot of people, some I did know for years via IRC, a lot of conversations and new ideas. So Flock was really great.

LinuxTag 2013

Mai 27th, 2013 von buergermeister

LinuxTag 2013 is over now since two days and most of us are back home. So it’s time to write down a conclusion. LinuxTag was this year a little bit of everything, good things and bad things. First of all the area where the exhibition always was, was not the same anymore. It was down in the cellar. That is positive as negative. For the exhibitors its nicer as normally it was always hot weather and hot inside, in the cellar is more cool. The rooms for the talks was also moved to the cellar, so all of the rooms except for the workshop and meeting rooms was on one floor. That was really visible during the breaks, there was definitely more people inside the exhibition area. So on the end we gave out twice more of DVD. As we had again a 3D printer on the booth we had a lot of visitors, they still attract the people. Opposite to that OLPC and RaspberryPi don’t are that interesting to the people anymore.

We had a lot of conversations on the booth, most of course was about 3D printing and what it has to do with Fedora, but like always there was some conversations about how to get a special software into the Fedora repositories. We was a lot of people on the booth and we needed them all so thanks go to Jens Kühnel, Dominic Hopf, Sebastian Mäki, Jiri Eischmann, Miro Hroncok, Francesco Vollero and especially to Alexandra Fedorova (who did notice there is a event on thursday and joined as just for saturday).

FrOSCon 2013 is coming

Mai 14th, 2013 von buergermeister

FrOSCon has called for talks and projects a while ago. Fedora has requested a booth already but there is still some time left (9 days) for submit talks and workshops. Last year we had also an DevRoom we shared with Mageia, openSUSE and Centos where we did a schedule with talks about RPM packaging. The question is now, do we want a DevRoom again and what we can do with it. Any suggestions are welcome.

Conclusion Linuxwochen Vienna

Mai 6th, 2013 von buergermeister

Linuxwochen 2013 in Vienna are over now, it was 3 days with a lot of talks. The program had 100 different talks and workshops and most of them was really filled up. As the Linuxwochen was this year in the new building of UAS Vienna, there was plenty of space for the exhibition, but not a lot of booths. Hopefully there will be more next year otherwise the exhibition is not interesting. Otherwise we had a lot of conversations and the 3D printer rocked again.
Personally I had 3 talks and 3 workshops, my talks was scheduled all for the first day. The talk about doing animations with Linux and Open Source was well visited and also the following talk about how to do slides with Inkscape. Interesting for me I doing this talk since over 3 years and its still new to the people, that it can be done. Last talk at that day was the introducion of the Fedora Design Suite and as it was the last talk on the day, there was not so lot of people as in my other talks.
On friday I had the first workshop at 2pm and it was good visited, there was 22 people and that is the optimal amount of people. For this workshop I had to switch to english as there was guests from aborad. If there is more interest in Brno, we can also do one of my Inkscape weekends there. The other two workshops I had on saturday beginning in the morning with the Blender one after a short lunch break the second Inkscape workshop followed. Also here they was filled up.
The system for the schedule the Linuxwochen use allows the visitors to vote for the talks and the speaker can see them, so I looked yesterday if I have comments on my talks and workshop and I already had for most of them good votes and comments. One comment said it’s already time that somebody starts to talk about how to do animations with Linux and Open Source. Actually I think about doing an workshop for that but the problem is, it’s for users and as Tupi isnt packaged for Fedora or openSUSE yet, it’s not possible. For Debian and Ubuntu there are packages but they are outdated. So we will see if in the future also workshops for animations can be done. So on the end Linuxwochen was a good event for me and I think I will be there 2014 again.

Fedora will rock Linuxwochen Vienna

April 23rd, 2013 von buergermeister

I will also have workshops in the program on friday one about Inkscape and on saturday one for using Inkscape again and a second one about using Blender, besides that I have also 3 talks introducing Fedoras Design Suite, how Tupi can be used for animations and the third talk will be about how you can use Inkscape for preparing presentation slides. In case you are interested in the program it can be found here.  I would say that’s a lot of talks and Fedora blue will be very visible….

The Winners! – Fedora 19 Supplemental Wallpaper

April 20th, 2013 von buergermeister

A few hours ago the voting for the Supplemental Wallpapers for Fedora 19 ended. This time we had not so much submissions like for Fedora 18 but still enough to make it hard to vote. So it’s time to present the results. If you are interested in the totally results, you will find them here.

I am happy, that we also got this time submissions from people they are not amongst the Fedora contributors yet. But also the submissions from our contributors was damn good. So I looking forward for the Supplemental Wallpaper Contest for Fedora 20.

But for doing it, I need some help. During this contest a lot of problems became visible, the wiki isnt a good place to do it and also our voting application isnt written to handle so much candidates. It looks we need a new application for it, in case you are interested writing such one – join the design channel and speak to me.

LibreGraphicsMeeting 2013 day 3

April 15th, 2013 von buergermeister

Saturday was the last the of LibreGraphicsMeeting 2013 in Madrid, the day started for me with an talk who was done via internet – The GIMP Magazin. I attended also Tav’s talk about the future things in Inkscape as there is really movenment changing the internal render engine. I had spoken with Tav at the party on the evening before about some things. Next talk for me was Jimmac’s talk how he misused Blender for doing the the introduction videos for GNOME. His talk ended like always ;)

After the last talk the “closing session” followed and there are a lot of changes in organizing LibreGraphicsMeeting in the future, we discussed some things. What I found very interesting is that Ale Rimoldi played the protector of the poor people, he said we should recignize that some cant afford to buy the ticket before and get later reimbursed. Find that very interesting as I went last year to him asking if that can be done for Gustav Gonzalez he was strict against it. Everything else I had as point was said from other people. So there will be some good changes in the future. We had later an organizing meeting for people who interested to help organizing LGM and it ended with nice ideas. As possible places for next year are Montreal/Canada, Medellin/Colombia, Buenes Aires/Argentina and Leipzig/Germany as possible hosts for next LGM version. And there will be a competition, means who makes the best proposals and presents the best solutions will get it. That session took a long time, but I am sure the changes are a big step forward in the right direction.

After that we went to an short bring your own food party and it was very nice, because a lot of nice discussions went on there. As Chris Murphy attended the LGM and also Pippin from GIMP we had a lot of time to speak about where to do the next Color Management Hackfest and we think Norway would be an good option as we could use the color lab, with the tools we need for driving CM on Linux forward. After Norway we think its the best option to make the CM Hackfest combined with LGM as there are lot of color people around and also applications that could be interested and need help. So on the end it was a nice week, with nice people a lot of new informations and nice results. Thx to all sponors to help to make that meeting happen and also thx to Fedora for sponsoring me.

LibreGraphicsMeeting 2013 day 2

April 14th, 2013 von buergermeister

The post for this day took me a while to write because on the third day there was the party and thanks to GIMP we had a lot of free beer there. But before the party was we had another day with talks, workshops and hackfests/disciussions to make. I had my second talk about open source movies after my talk Nina Paley had her talk asking where a useful free animation tool is.

The rest of the day I worked together with Boudewijn Rempt and Gustav Gonzalez on ideas how Tupi and Krita can be work together. We found some bugs in the Tupi code, which will be fixed soon and that will make import more faster. We also worked together with Jon Nordby from Mypaint on ideas to have a common format for brushes so Krita, MyPaint, GIMP, Tupi and Synfig could work with the same brushes.

LibreGraphicsMeeting 2013 day 1

April 12th, 2013 von buergermeister

Today was the second day of LibreGraphicsMeeting in Madrid. I did not attend a lot of talks as I used the time, to speak with some people. Gustav Gonzalez and me had also the time to speak with Nina Paley an present Tupi to her. She likes the simplicity of the GUI but find it to embryonic in the features. Yesterday she tried to use Synfig and think the learning curve is to high for using it. But Inkscape at least she likes, she wishes it would support animations, so I told her from the plans Andy Fitz had once.

Rest of the day I attended the Krita workshop from Animtim, he showed Kritas newest thing called Krita Sketch, actually I like the simple GUI more then Krita as desktop version. But I met also other people, I had short time to talk with Robert Martinez, who works together with me on OCAL, mabye we put in in the lightning talks a short about the next version of OCAL showing how it will look like.

LibreGraphicsMeeting 2013 day 0

April 11th, 2013 von buergermeister

First day of LGM is done, it started late and it ended late. I attended the Synfig Animation workshop which get an break because of an fire alert. After the workshop the talks started but not as scheduled. I had the third talk and was half an hour to late, so I went through my talk very fast and skipped also the questions. But I think it was a good talk about the Fedora Design Suite. Personally I was interested in Tavmong Bahs talk about the future of SVG -SVG 2.0 But he prepared a lot of slides and most of them explained what SVG is and he runt out of time as the talks on LGM are only 20 minutes.

The rest of the day was a lot meeting old friends and new people, but a little bit stressful for me as I had to manage to close the supplemental wallpaper process and attend the EMEA Ambassadors meeting, but I managed that until my battery run off power. So its already late now and I am tired. But tomorrow will be a new day full of talk, in case you are interested they will be streamed: http://streaming.medialab-prado.es/
